NFL Rumors: James White Waiting Out Market, Has Multiple Interested Teams

Longtime New England Patriots running back James White is one of the best receiving threats left on the market, but the latest NFL rumors suggest he won’t be signing any time soon. According to ESPN’s Mike Giradi, the three-time Super Bowl champion is content to take his time, wait out the market, and see if more offers come in.

NFL Rumors: James White “Taking His Time” In Free Agent Market

From a pure volume standpoint, James White had a relatively disappointing season in 2020. During his first year without Tom Brady, White finished the season with just 49 receptions for 375 yards and one touchdown – his lowest numbers since 2015. However, most of this dip had to do with New England embracing a run-first offense that put a heavier focus on Damien Harris and Sony Michel. The Wisconsin product was as efficient as ever on a per-touch basis, finishing the season with 2.22 yards per route run – second best in the league among running backs.

White reportedly wants more offers to come in, but there are teams currently interested in acquiring his services. It should come as no surprise that the New England Patriots would love to retain his services. White has been one of the most reliable players on the team over the past decade, and the Patriots don’t have anyone that could fill his role. Sony Michel and Damien Harris are both at their best as runners, and second-year undrafted free agent J.J. Taylor doesn’t have much experience in the role.

Should White leave in free agency, there is a good chance he lands with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tom Brady obviously has a proven rapport with White, and the Buccaneers do not have a pass-catching running back on the roster. Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones are both bad in the passing game, and Ke’Shawn Vaughn left a lot to be desired during his limited playing time as a rookie. Alternatively, some rumors suggest that the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans could be interested in White.
