With the NFL regular season coming to an end and the playoff picture starting to take shape, the NFL MVP race is coming down to two players in a tight race: Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers. Here are the cases for both players.
The NFL MVP Race: Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes
The Case for Patrick Mahomes
The reigning Super Bowl MVP, Patrick Mahomes, is having another exceptional year. He has led his Kansas City Chiefs to a stellar 12-1 record and has them sitting at the number one seed for the playoffs. Mahomes has 35 total touchdowns on the season while throwing five interceptions. He leads the league in total yards with 4,458 and has a completion percentage of 68. Mahomes is also only 25 years old, looking like the future of the NFL for the next decade. He also has a respectable quarterback rating of 112. Let’s face it, Mahomes has had a very good year. The Chiefs are the team to beat and Mahomes has the best weapons in the NFL in Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Mecole Hardman. This offense is geared toward Mahomes. It allows him to thrive. But, he is still the young gun on the block and some of the veterans are still playing at a high level.
The Case for Aaron Rodgers
The one man that is challenging Mahomes for MVP this year is Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is turning back the clock with his play this year. Leading the league with 41 total touchdowns and only four interceptions, Rodgers is scoring the ball better than any quarterback. Still in the top five in total yards with 3,779 and with a completion percentage of 70, Rodgers looks like he hasn’t missed a beat. He also has a league-leading quarterback rating of 119. Rodgers is 37 years old. He doesn’t have many years like this left. His offense is not built to help him. He only has one trustable wide receiver in Davante Adams. He has a stellar running back in Aaron Jones but outside of that, his weapons aren’t nearly as good as Mahomes.
Why Rodgers Deserves MVP
I think Aaron Rodgers deserves to win MVP and here is why. Rodgers has done more with less this year. He’s playing at the same level as Mahomes and he is 12 years older than him and on the back half of his career. As I said, Rodgers doesn’t have the top weapons as Mahomes does, and yet he still has more touchdowns and fewer interceptions. Rodgers even had a game where he threw 0 touchdowns and he still has six more touchdowns than Mahomes! I think if you swap quarterbacks on the teams, Rodgers would have even better stats than Mahomes does with the Chiefs right now. The league needs to appreciate what Rodgers is doing this year. He has the Packers in the top spot of the NFC and looks primed for a run to the Super Bowl. Aaron Rodgers has my vote for MVP and I don’t think it’s close.
