After the acquisitions of AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs this offseason, the latest New England Patriots rumors may suggest releasing three wide receivers before the 2026 campaign. It’s going to be a tough training camp this month for the Patriots’ receivers in finding their rhythm. With Doubs and Brown a lock as the top receiving options, QB Drake Maye has enough talented weapons to thrive as a pocket passer, but where does that leave the rest? While Kayshon Boutte has been named a trade candidate this offseason, multiple receivers are waiting for a larger opportunity.
DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism are a part of the logjam, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see one of them released after NFL Training Camp. While there’s excitement for the new offense, the Patriots can’t afford to bring everyone on board on the starting roster. The team could trade Boutte, and that’d make it easier to keep Hollins and Williams while they release Chism and put him on the practice squad.
At the same time, they’d need Boutte, who’s been an explosive asset as a primary slot wideout. Between him, Doubs and Brown, the trio sounds way too good for them to move on.

Patriots Rumors: 3 Top Cut Candidates Surprisingly Emerge
So What?
While the Patriots are actively shopping, what does this leave Hollins, Douglas, Williams and Chism? Let’s analyze this a bit: they aren’t releasing nor trading Williams, as the former third-round pick was just drafted last year. This is why moving on from Boutte might have felt easier, but even the smooth path is risky. It’s a gamble of decisions that will ultimately be decided by the Patriots front office, but it won’t be an easy one.
Let’s break down the three wide receivers who could be cut before the 2026 season, and the potential fits for each.
Cut Candidates
Mack Hollins
This would probably be one of the more shocking releases from the New England Patriots, but it’s not impossible. Hollins originally joined the organization last year with low expectations, but ended up being a solid contributor behind Stefon Diggs and Boutte. During the 2025 season, the receiver hauled in 46 receptions for 550 yards and two touchdowns.
While it isn’t All-Pro numbers, he still proved that he can be a reliable receiver, but with many talented weapons the Patriots have, nobody should expect much from Hollins in this squad. As he enters 33-years-old this year, it’s hard to see he’ll garner much trade interest, so a release is probably the best route. The receiver will most likely receive free agent interest, but nothing more than a one-year deal since he has been more of a journeyman for most of his career.
Possible Landing Spots: Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons
Demario Douglas
Meanwhile, this one isn’t as surprising. Entering the league in 2023, Demario Douglas had a ton of promise, but with the rise of Boutte, he was unable to find his role in this offense. Last year, the receiver barely exceeded 400 receiving yards while hauling in three touchdowns. This is an easy release, and anyone is lucky to find this gem. He’s still 25-years-old and is expected to be picked up relatively fast.
Possible Landing Spots: Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens
Efton Chism
With Efton Chism, he’s an interesting one as the receiver operates more as a punt return specialist. However, Chism has had his moments as a pass-catcher throughout the season last year. This would probably be a hit-or-miss for teams looking to add depth in the receiving unit. It would not be surprising if he lands on the practice squad if released, but these teams could sneak in and sign him.
Possible Landing Spots: Los Angeles Rams, Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers
