Tucker Kraft

Why a Tucker Kraft Extension Could Be the Packers’ Smartest Move Yet

The Green Bay Packers have already taken care of two key pieces of their offensive future this offseason. Wide receivers Christian Watson and Jayden Reed both signed contract extensions, ensuring quarterback Jordan Love will have familiar weapons for years to come.

Now, attention turns to the next player in line. Tucker Kraft. Kraft is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and after his breakout 2025 season, an extension feels less like a possibility and more like an eventuality. The only question is what that deal will look like and whether Green Bay can get it done before his price climbs even higher.

Why a Tucker Kraft Extension Could Be the Packers’ Smartest Move Yet

Tucker Kraft Was Emerging as an Elite Tight End

Before a torn ACL ended his season in November, Tucker Kraft was playing like one of the best tight ends in football. Through eight games, he recorded 32 receptions for 489 yards and six touchdowns. He was on pace for more than 1,000 receiving yards and double-digit touchdowns.

What made Kraft special was not just the production. It was how he produced it. According to Pro Football Focus, Kraft led all NFL tight ends in yards after the catch per reception and yards per catch before his injury. Every touch felt like a chance for a big play. Whether it was running through defenders, breaking tackles, or turning a short completion into an explosive gain, Kraft became one of the most dangerous players in Green Bay’s offense. For a team searching for a true offensive centerpiece, Kraft was becoming exactly that.

The Injury Creates an Interesting Negotiation Window

Normally, a player coming off a season like Kraft’s would have all the leverage. The ACL injury changes the conversation slightly. While all signs point toward Kraft being ready for the start of the 2026 season, there is still some uncertainty surrounding any player returning from a major knee injury. That uncertainty could create a unique opportunity for the Packers.

If Green Bay waits another year and Kraft returns to his pre-injury form, his value could explode. By negotiating now, the Packers may be able to secure a deal that reflects both his elite upside and the small amount of risk that still exists during his recovery. That could save the organization significant money down the road.

What Could a New Contract Look Like?

Projecting tight end contracts is never easy, but Spotrac has estimated a deal in the range of four years and $62 million. That would give Tucker Kraft an average annual value of $15.5 million, placing him among the highest-paid tight ends in the NFL. At first glance, that seems expensive. However, Kraft is already under contract for 2026 and scheduled to earn approximately $3.93 million through the proven performance escalator. For a player entering his prime and coming off a season in which he looked capable of becoming an All-Pro, that number represents outstanding value.

Why the Packers Should Get This Done Soon

General manager Brian Gutekunst has shown a willingness to extend core players before they become significantly more expensive. The Packers followed that blueprint with Reed and Watson this offseason. Kraft feels like the next logical step.

Beyond the production, Kraft checks every box the organization values. He is a physical player, an effective blocker, a leader in the locker room, and a perfect fit in coach Matt LaFleur’s offense. He has also made it clear that he wants to spend his entire career in Green Bay.

If Kraft returns healthy and plays the way he did before the injury, the price tag will only rise. Waiting could eventually push negotiations closer to the top of the tight end market. For the Packers, extending Tucker Kraft now may not just be about rewarding one of their best young players. It could be about securing one of the league’s most complete tight ends before everyone else realizes exactly how good he is.
