Is Brendan Sorsby to the Jets on the horizon? The Texas Tech quarterback’s name has been in the NFL news a lot throughout this offseason. After a successful two-season tenure at the University of Cincinnati, the ex-Bearcats quarterback transferred to Texas Tech with the hopes that it would improve Brendan Sorsby’s NFL Draft stock in 2027. While eying the chance to play football in Lubbock and help improve his chances to be an NFL Draft pick, controversy surrounded him. Despite this, could Brendan Sorsby to the Jets still be on the table?
Shortly after his transfer to Texas Tech was announced, concerns over Sorsby’s eligibility emerged after reports of his gambling during his tenure at Indiana became public. Shortly after the 2026 NFL Draft, Sorsby checked into a rehabilitation facility to manage his gambling addiction. After a lengthy legal battle ensued to regain eligibility, he opted to enroll in the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft and part from the Red Raiders. As a result, an NFL team can forego a 2027 NFL Draft pick by participating in the Supplemental Draft to add Sorsby to their team.
With the Supplemental Draft taking place in the final days of July, general managers will have time to evaluate their quarterback rooms and determine if Sorsby is worth adding. Brendan Sorsby will have interest in the next level. One of those teams could be the New York Jets. With starter Geno Smith on the final year of his contract, and Jets rookie Cade Klubnik the frontrunner for the backup job, New York could be interested in pursuing Brendan Sorsby. But is Branden Sorsby to the Jets in the best interests of both the team and the player? Let us examine further.
Brendan Sorsby Going to the NFL: Are the Jets an Option?
Brendan Sorsby Background
A native of Denton, Texas, Brendan Sorsby played quarterback at Lake Dallas High School. Ranked as a three-star recruit and a two-sport athlete in both football and baseball, he received interest from multiple schools. Ultimately, Brendan Sorsby opted to play for the Indiana Hoosiers after committing to the program in January of 2022.
After limited action during his freshman season, Sorsby became the Hoosiers starting quarterback in 2023. After struggling to begin the season, Sorsby was replaced by Tayven Jackson during week seven. Eventually, Sorsby regained the starting job for the remainder of the season. Despite completing 57% of his passes for 1,587 yards with 15 touchdowns to five interceptions, he entered the transfer portal after finishing 1-6 as the Hoosiers starter.
New Chapter in Cincinnati
In 2024, Brendan Sorsby officially transferred to the University of Cincinnati. The move proved to be beneficial both for the quarterback and the program. During his first season, Sorsby threw for 2,813 yards on 389 pass attempts with 18 touchdown passes to seven interceptions, while completing 64% of his passes. On the ground, Sorsby ran for 447 yards on 105 carries, along with nine rushing touchdowns.
While his completion percentage fell to 61% in 2025, Sorsby continued to progress. He ended 2025 with 2,800 yards on 336 pass attempts with 27 touchdown passes to only five interceptions. On top of it, he ran for another nine touchdowns and finished with a career-high 580 yards on 100 carries. Due to Sorsby’s contributions, the Bearcats made their first bowl game in three years. Alas, Cincinnati would go on to lose to Navy in the Liberty Bowl
Brendan Sorsby’s Transfer to Texas Tech, Gambling Addiction Coming to Light
Just before Christmas, Brendan Sorsby entered the transfer portal. Within weeks, he struck a deal to transfer to Texas Tech in January 2026. After the Red Raiders reached the College Football Playoff for the first time, the program believed Sorsby can open up their offense to contribute alongside head coach Joey McGuire’s talented defense. It also provided Sorsby with a bigger stage to perform with a chance to elevate his stock for the 2027 NFL Draft as well.
However, few could have predicted the off-field attention such a decision would escalate to back in the winter. In April, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Sorsby checked into rehab to combat a longtime gambling addiction. Court documents shared by the quarterback’s representation verified that Sorsby placed 40 total bets on Indiana football or individual players from September 2nd to October 22nd of 2022. In direct violation of NCAA rules, he utilized multiple accounts owned by family & friends to accomplish this over the last four years. Thus far, law enforcement has yet to pursue any recourse, and no connection has been made to any bets affecting the outcome of a game.
Despite denying allegations of point shaving, the NCAA revoked Sorsby’s eligibility on May 18th. Within two weeks, he was denied both his request for reinstatement & Texas Tech’s appeal for his reinstatement were separately denied by the organization. However, last week, a Texas Judge took center stage after providing Brendan Sorsby with an injunction. Thus preventing the organization from denying his eligibility. But, for violating the NCAA’s anti-gambling rules, Sorsby would miss the first two games of the Red Raiders season. Such an unconventional ruling sent the NCAA to retaliate quickly. By the next day, the organization appealed the Judge’s injunction in Sorsby’s favor to the Court of Appeals for the Seventh District of Texas.

Brendan Sorsby ends eligibility fight and declares for the NFL Supplemental Draft
Less than a week after the NCAA’s appeal of the injunction, Brendan Sorsby put an end to the controversy once and for all on June 15. Both Sorsby & Texas Tech came to the decision to mutually part ways. As a result, Brendan Sorsby would officially end his collegiate career and declared himself for the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft.
To simplify, next month, NFL teams will have an opportunity to add Brendan Sorsby to their roster during the Supplemental Draft. If a deal can be reached, the franchise must give up a 2027 NFL Draft pick for the round they select Sorsby in. This will be the first supplemental draft since 2023; however, no selections were made. If Sorsby is selected, it’d be the first Supplemental Draft since 2019 that a player was picked.
Brendan Sorsby Player Profile
Before the controversy, Sorsby’s Bearcats tenure changed evaluators’ opinions on his future. Playing for an experienced offensive head coach in Scott Satterfield allowed the Bearcats quarterback to make the most of his opportunities. At 6’3″, 235 lbs, Sorsby has prototypical size with 4.65 40-yard speed to pair with it. Sorsby’s pocket presence allowed for limited sacks. However, he tends to abandon clean pockets and force plays. Refining his footwork is a must to truly succeed. He has enough arm strength to connect with confidence over the middle of the field and deep routes. A few mechanical tweaks can bode well for his ball placement on throws outside the numbers.

Sorsby has potential, but he’ll need patience. Putting Brendan Sorsby out there to compete for a starting job now would be detrimental. Like drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth. But the right mentoring could bode well for his development. Landing with a veteran offensive mind that has a strong running game & established starter would be ideal for him to learn from. The key for Sorsby this season should be to learn without the pressure of being thrust into playing time right away. Getting backup reps with a veteran offensive line could provide a foundation to let the game slow down and better access progressions.
While he possesses traits that can lead to a good developmental backup, the gambling controversy does draw red flags. After some scouts projected Sorsby as high as an early second-round pick in 2027, is he worth the investment of a top-50 pick right now? Can you justify a potential top-100 pick on him instead of landing a potential starting-caliber player in the 2027 Draft class? Can a front office take this large of a risk on a player with his controversy?

Would Brendan Sorsby to the Jets be in New York’s best interest?
So, what if he’s there for New York in the third or fourth round? Brendan Sorsby to the Jets would give them another young developmental project behind Geno Smith. Brendan Sorsby to the Jets wouldn’t impede New York’s plan to open the season with the two-time Pro Bowler under center. New York expects Geno Smith to open up the passing game and provide a stable presence for a young offense. However, after drafting Cade Klubnik out of Clemson in the fourth round, it’d be another rookie. One of the few advantages Sorsby would have is that he’s slightly bigger than Klubnik without sacrificing the dual-threat ability. But while Sorsby has shown consistent accuracy, Klubnik is still on par with him.
While Brendan Sorsby to the Jets would give New York another option to examine, it’s not worth the team using a top 100 draft pick on him. Brendan Sorsby to the Jets wouldn’t prevent Darren Mougey from taking a first-round quarterback next year. But the Jets have to continue their due diligence surrounding the roster. While quarterback will be a major need, the team should also target interior offensive and defensive linemen next April. As well as a long-term piece at linebacker if Jamien Sherwood doesn’t bounce back. While Brendan Sorsby to the Jets sounds good on paper, adding another rookie to compete for the backup quarterback job would just add more problems to offensive coordinator Frank Reich’s plate.

Brendan Sorsby and Texas Tech have spent weeks looking for a route to get him to play in Lubbock this season. But in the end, his own actions in the gambling controversy did him no favors. Now with a chance to play in the NFL, it’s asking a lot for a general manager to put their faith in him. Especially Darren Mougey. While Brendan Sorsby to the Jets would provide them with a development project with upside, the team is in no rush for a new quarterback. Ideally, the Jets will find their next franchise quarterback with one of their three first-round picks in 2027.
While the quarterback room needs help, Brendan Sorsby to the Jets isn’t worth it for the team to explore. On the field, there’s no denying he has the potential to be a long-term backup and compete for a starting job in the right situation. But bringing Brendan Sorsby to the Jets feels like the antithesis of how Darren Mougey has operated the front office thus far. If he’s there in the fifth or sixth round, it would be more bearable. But Brendan Sorsby to the Jets sounds like a much better idea to theorize instead of execute.
