The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has found himself in trouble once again and will have to serve 30 days in jail. According to the breaking news, Rice tested positive for marijuana, which violates the terms of his current probation. The receiver is on probation due to being involved in a car crash that left multiple people injured on a Dallas highway two years ago. However, the Texas State Attorney’s Office has ordered the receiver to serve his sentence immediately and will not be released until next month.
Rice, selected as a second-round pick in 2023, was projected to return as a top starter for the Patrick Mahomes offense. Last season, Rice missed the majority of the 2025 campaign for his criminal convictions. Now, the Chiefs might face a possible decision time regarding his future. After his suspension, it wasn’t the only time he was involved in legal trouble.
Rice faced multiple allegations from his former girlfriend and the mother of his two children. The lawsuit alleged that Rice assaulted the victim, but the NFL was unable to find sufficient evidence to support a finding that the receiver violated the league’s personal conduct policy.

Rashee Rice Probation Violation: A Shocking Chiefs Release is Imminent
As of this posting, the receiver will miss OTAs this offseason, but the bigger question becomes: Can he stay out of trouble? Along with this, the wideout is already entering the final year of his rookie deal, and, understandably, the Chiefs are wary of extending him. This will be a “prove-it” season for him, but don’t be surprised if the Chiefs sign a veteran wideout before the 2026 season. However, they’d still need to figure out the future of Rice before signing a new wideout.
There are multiple free agent wide receivers still available, including Stefon Diggs, Deebo Samuel and Keenan Allen. A trade would’ve been something to think about, but Rice’s potential, combined with his legal troubles, is too risky for teams. For the remainder of this story, let’s put together three teams that might be able to revive his career to keep him out of trouble if he can’t in Kansas City.
Possible Next Teams
Los Angeles Chargers
If released, the Los Angeles Chargers might be a suitable destination for the troubled receiver. The team failed to secure at least a veteran receiver this free agency, but they selected a low-stakes Brenen Thompson in the draft. While the Chargers are still rebuilding their offense, QB Justin Herbert needs playmakers who are winners. The team hasn’t entertained bringing back Keenan Allen, but with Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston returning for another season, they need more help in the backend.
Rice would actually fit into this offense as the clear-cut WR1 for this group. He’s still talented, versatile and has nice hands that Herbert would appreciate. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh might be able to get the Chiefs’ wideout in rhythm and get him to focus on football.
Indianapolis Colts
The Colts could use a veteran receiver before the 2026 campaign. The team traded Michael Pittman Jr. to Pittsburgh due to salary cap concerns. After giving Alec Pierce a monster deal, there are still shoes to be filled alongside Josh Downs. QB Daniel Jones thrives when he has his offensive weapons, and Rice could be a major piece missing if he’s released and can be on good behavior.
Los Angeles Rams
Just like Indianapolis, there’s still a need for a receiver in Sean McVay’s offense. QB Matthew Stafford is no longer in his prime and would appreciate an all-star offensive supporting cast. The team explored trading Davante Adams earlier this offseason, but that would’ve been troubling. The team hasn’t been shy about acquiring former Chiefs talent, trading for Trent McDuffie and signing Jaylen Watson.
Rice could be the next one to join this talented offense, especially with it being Adams’ possible last year in the league.
