Drafting Antonio Williams in the third round of the NFL Draft was a very intelligent choice by the Washington Commanders. He will provide immediate quickness and separation to the offense. However, to ask a rookie to come in and be a consistent WR2 option or the focal point out of the slot against a stout NFL defense may not always work out. That is where a vet comes into play; someone who knows leverage and coverage reads at the professional level and how to get open when things break down. This would give Williams not just competition, but some support that would bolster the whole passing attack. A vet like that for a young QB such as Jayden Daniels could translate some flashes to some steady production.
Smart Veteran WR Targets Who Could Boost the Commanders’ Offense
Will the Washington Commanders and Brandon Aiyuk Saga Ever Come to a Close?
It has been long rumored that the Washington Commanders would pursue Brandon Aiyuk as a WR2 option behind Terry McLaurin. Jayden Daniels and Aiyuk played together at Arizona State, and it has been no secret that the Commanders front office has been interested in creating a reunion between the two. Aiyuk would add excellent depth and provide McLaurin plenty of relief on the field.
The issue currently is that while the 49ers are actively looking for trade partners, they have not received offers that the work for them. While Washington and general manager Adam Peters are very interested in pursuing Aiyuk, they will not do so via a trade. It seems that the Commanders will hold out until Aiyuk is released and pursue him then if everything unfolds the way they hope.
Hopkins Could Be a Great Mentor for Williams
If the Washington Commanders want a short term boost without tying themselves down, veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins fits the bill. He is not a long term solution, but still has enough left to contribute in key spots. Following a one year stint with the Baltimore Ravens where he posted 22 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns, he is looking for his next opportunity. In Washington, that role would be simple. Be a reliable option, help move the chains, and serve as a veteran presence for Antonio Williams and Jayden Daniels while the offense continues to grow.
Keenan Allen Still Has a Lot Left in the Tank
If the Washington Commanders are looking for an aging receiver who can still contribute at a low cost, Keenan Allen would be a strong option. The veteran wide receiver has already brushed off rumors of his impending retirement and confirmed he plans on playing in 2026. Although his initial preference was to continue with the Chargers, it is no guarantee that it will happen considering the issues surrounding contract and cap space.
Allen would be an ideal fit for the Washington Commanders because the veteran wouldn’t have to be the engine of the offense. He would instead be a reliable option to have route running skills and awareness to find the soft spot underneath for Jayden Daniels to rely on. his would offer immediate help without committing for the long haul, something that has thus far been missing from this offense.
Veteran Depth is a Much-Needed Hole to Fill in Washington
Ultimately, while the Washington Commanders have invested in youth, they are still lacking that veteran receiver that they need. A short-term move, such as signing DeAndre Hopkins or Keenan Allen, would not be to try and recapture past glory, but instead would be an effort to elevate the current offense. Having that sort of reliable option would allow Jayden Daniels a viable target as his weapons mature. It is a simple formula; invest in the now and allow the future to be bred naturally.
