Falcons Give Penix Jr. Injury Update

A lot has happened this week with the Atlanta Falcons. We will discuss Matt Ryan, providing an update on Michael Penix Jr’s injury status, along with several other headlines that have surfaced over the past few days. From roster movement to injury updates and a few developments that could carry into the coming weeks, there is plenty to sort through.

Matt Ryan provides injury update on Michael Penix Jr

During an interview on 680 The Fan, Atlanta Falcons President of Football Operations Matt Ryan provided an injury update on Michael Penix Jr.

“I never went through an ACL, but there’s certain milestones that you’ve got to hit, and the closer you get, the more variability there is because the intensity and the speed picks up. Mike’s in a good spot right now. As far as expectations, we don’t really know what to expect at the beginning of training camp. But I think with the way both of those guys are working and the conversations we’ve had with both of them about — I believe quarterbacks should be the most competitive people on your team. Whether that’s first, second, or third, there’s a way to go out there and compete and win the day. . . . I think the way both those guys have started the offseason will put us in a good spot.”

What this means for Atlanta heading into training camp

First off, that sentence alone screams ‘uncertainty’ even in its nicely worded form. “We don’t really know what to expect,” coming from Matt Ryan should not be coachspeak. It should sound like a front office preparing for a situation that will undoubtedly change.

With Michael Penix Jr. recovering from an ACL injury, this makes perfect sense. Offseason optimism isn’t hard; it’s during training camp with live, full-speed reps that things become real.

A continued focus on competition

What’s more eye-catching than the injury update is the continued focus on competition.

When Ryan emphasizes that “quarterbacks have to continue to compete and win the day,” he’s laying the groundwork for what seems to be an actual competition. Whether that competition is for Michael Penix or recent acquisition Tua Tagovailoa, it’s clear Atlanta isn’t giving away any positions based on draft status or expectations.

Translation: They aren’t waiting around if Michael Penix isn’t ready.

Reading between the lines

The reality is that the Falcons, just like many other teams with this kind of injury, aren’t going to give anyone an official timeline. This is due to the fact that if they do and they’re wrong, they have to answer for it.

The main thing to remember here is, “we don’t really know what to expect at the beginning of training camp.”

That doesn’t sound like someone who will be 100 percent cleared and ready to roll day one. It sounds like someone who might or might not be there when other QBs are already installing and building a connection. This is important, and I think it is a detail many are going to downplay.

What to expect in training camp

The Falcons are not losing their heads, but they’re also not pretending this isn’t an uneven ramp-up.

Michael Penix might be the Falcons quarterback of the future, but as of now, they are likely hedging their bet with Tua rather than one certainty.

If a real QB competition breaks out during training camp, then nobody can say that they weren’t warned.
