Why Mike Tomlin Stepped Down and Joined NBC

Considered to be one of the greatest coaches of the Pittsburgh Steelers, it is hard to believe that head coach Mike Tomlin chose to walk away. He has never had a losing season in the 19 seasons he coached. But every person has a breaking point. No doubt Tomlin possibly reached his.

In an April 26 interview with Maria Taylor, he broke his silence on why he decided to resign. There were two primary reasons why he decided to call it quits. But what were they?

Why Mike Tomlin Stepped Down and Joined NBC

Lack of Recent Playoff Success

Mike Tomlin admitted that the team’s inability to advance in the postseason in recent years weighed on him. He never had a losing season. But the Steelers had not won a play-off game since the 2016 campaign.

He felt that the organization, including Pro Bowlers Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt, deserved the excitement and optimism that comes with a fresh start and new leadership.

Personal Timing and ‘Loneliness’

He mentioned a striking comment stating ‘loneliness to leadership’. He did not describe it as burnout, but rather a realization that after 19 years, he reached a point where he needed to step into a new space for his own personal growth.

The Steelers’ 2025 Wild Card Exit

The immediate catalyst was the 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans in the 2025 Wild Card round. The 2025 season saw the Steelers maintain their ‘no losing seasons’ streak. But the lopsided exit in the postseason exit seemed to confirm to Tomlin that the franchise has been stagnant. He described the decision as something that was not made overnight.

Foreshadowing the Resignation

Many people tend to forget this. But it was revealed that this was not a snap judgment after the loss. Former teammate and friend Ronde Barber mentioned that Tomlin had shared as early as January 2025 that he expected the 2025 NFL season to be his last at the helm.

So what is next for Tomlin and the Steelers?

Tomlin will serve as a primary studio analyst. He is essentially filling in for Hall of Famer Tony Dungy, who has been with the network since 2009.

Expanding the Roster

Reports also indicate that former quarterback Chris Simms is out at the network as they prioritize Tomin’s star power.
