The Latest Washington Commanders Draft Rumors

Washington Commanders Draft Rumors: No Clear Favorite at No. 7

The Washington Commanders draft rumors have been running rampant over the past couple of months. The closer the draft gets, the less clarity there seems to be around what Washington will do with the seventh overall pick.

That uncertainty is not coming from a lack of options. It is coming from too many.

ESPN’s John Keim made that clear when discussing Washington’s position during an interview with JP Finlay and Brian Mitchell on 106.7 the Fan.

“There are a handful of guys who all make sense… there’s a lot of guys there, and that’s the good thing for them, but it’s the hard thing when you’re trying to figure it out,” Keim said.

That is the balancing act. Flexibility sounds great until you actually have to make the call.

Impact Players Are of the Utmost Importance

One thing that continues to stand out is how Washington is approaching this pick philosophically.

There is no guarantee as to whether they are leaning offense or defense. But one thing is for certain and that is that they need impact players.

“I think it’s more about getting a high impact player… whatever side of the ball that is, because they don’t have enough of those guys,” Keim said. “You need dudes.”

That concept sounds simple enough. The Commanders need to find a difference maker and figure the rest out later.

Does it Make Sense to Trade Down?

Because there are multiple players graded similarly, the idea of trading down is still a real possibility.

Keim laid out in what situation it makes sense to trade down.

“If you’re sitting there and you like all these guys about the same, you can trade back several spots and still get one of them,” he said.

At the same time, there is a clear warning attached to that approach.

“You need high impact players… you might get more good players, but you need some high impact guys too, and just acquiring more picks doesn’t make it a good draft,” Keim added.

Washington Commanders Draft Rumors: Defense Still Needs Work

Even after free agency, the defense remains one of the biggest areas to address.

JP Finlay pointed to the frustration from last season, where the Commanders consistently found themselves digging out of early holes.

Keim agreed there has been progress, but stopped short of making any guarantees.

“I think they’re definitely better… significantly would be tough to say without having watched them,” he said.

That uncertainty is part of the reason defense continues to feel like a strong possibility at No. 7.

Brian Mitchell added another layer when discussing safety Caleb Downs and what he could bring.

“Remember Earl Thomas… he wasn’t the biggest guy, but he was smart as hell and he made plays, and I think Caleb kind of fits that bill more,” Mitchell said.

A Draft With Multiple Paths

At the end of the day, the Washington Commanders draft rumors guarantee one thig. They are not locked into one direction. They have plenty of options available, but also have plenty of holes to address.

Keim summed it up in a way that feels about right for where things stand.

“They protected themselves with their free agent moves, but they didn’t solve every issue,” he said.

Which leaves Washington in a position where several outcomes make sense.

Now they just have to pick the right one.
