Geno Smith, Free Agency options

Why Geno Smith is Still a Top Target for QB-Needy Teams

Quarterback Geno Smith’s tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders is effectively over now. But he can still be a top target for teams looking for a veteran presence.

The Raiders released Smith after one year with the organization, according to ESPN. Despite signing a massive two-year,  $75 million extension in 2025, the Raiders went 3-14, and Smith’s performance was inconsistent. So why did it not work out in Vegas?

Smith with the 2025 Las Vegas Raiders

Smith threw an NFL-worst 17 interceptions in just 15 starts, finishing with a 19:17 touchdown-to-interception ratio. This was in large part due to the offensive line, which was widely under scrutiny in 2025. Smith was sacked 55 times, which was the most in his NFL career.

Numerous journalists and analysts like to suggest that Smith was ‘held back’ by a corrupted offensive philosophy. Due to the inconsistencies of both Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly, many assumed that Smith was doomed to fail. Also, his reaction and relationships with fans only added to what was a troubled season for the Raiders. But despite this, he is still a top quarterback for a team that will need one.

From Smith to Mendoza?

The Raiders are trying to target Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza for the upcoming 2026 NFL draft. This was just a matter of time, considering that Smith was not the long-term quarterback of the future.

Analysts have identified several teams that could seek Smith as a veteran ‘bridge’ starter or a high-end backup. However, he is still a top target in the following ways:

Elite Passer Status

From 2022 to 2024, while with the Seattle Seahawks, Smith was statistically a top-tier quarterback. He ranked fourth in passing yards, eighth in touchdowns, and third in completion percentage league-wide in that time period.

The Lackluster Class of 2026

The 2026 free agent class for quarterbacks is considered average at best. Other than Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa, and Anthony Richardson Sr., Smith is considered one of the most proven available for teams needing a reliable player to start.

Teams to Consider

Minnesota Vikings: Ultimately, this is regarded as the top landing spot because he can serve as a bridge to J.J. McCarthy. The Vikings quarterback struggled with health and consistency in 2025.

New York Jets: A potential reunion could happen as the Jets are looking for a veteran quarterback. This roster includes running back Breece Hall and wideout Garrett Wilson.

Cincinnati Bengals: This could be a wildcard option as Smith would ultimately be an elite backup to quarterback Joe Burrow. He has struggled to stay healthy over the course of several seasons.
