College Football: Big 12 Power Rankings

We are through six weeks of the college football season, and as we head into Week 7, these are the power rankings in the Big 12 conference.

Big 12 Power Rankings

1. Texas Tech

The Red Raiders’ top transfer haul this offseason still appears to be worth every penny. Texas Tech romped Houston 35-11 in Week 6 thanks to three TDs from their running back duo of J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey. They will be favored in every game the rest of the way.

2. Arizona State

The Sun Devils had a bye in Week 6, which seems to be timed perfectly for them. In Week 7, they have a road trip to Utah, before hosting Texas Tech in Week 8. These next two games are two of the biggest remaining on the Big 12 schedule, and will tell us everything about Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils’ chances to repeat as conference champions.

3. Utah

Time has allowed the Utes to climb back up the list after their ugly loss to Texas Tech a few weeks ago. The fact of the matter is that the game was only one loss, and you will likely be able to make it to Dallas with two in this conference. Devon Dampier vs Sam Leavitt is going to be one heck of a QB battle in Week 7.

4. TCU

Josh Hoover is next in a long line of Big 12 quarterbacks who ends the season with a “He threw for how many yards?” stat line. Against Colorado, he needed every bit of those 275 yards to put the Buffaloes away, and this team is likely to find itself in shootouts each and every week the rest of the way.

5. BYU

Like Bachman-Turner Overdrive, BYU just keeps taking care of business. In Week 6, Bear Bachmeier set his very young career-high in passing yards with 351 against a mediocre WVU team. This team is impossible to evaluate until they face another one of the conference’s upper-echelon teams.

6. Cincinnati

It’s time to put some respect on Cincinnati’s name. Brendan Sorsby continues to deliver via both the air and the ground, and in Week 6 the duo of Tawee Walker and Evan Pryor added in a combined 200 yards. This offense will allow the Bearcats to compete against anyone in this league.

7. Iowa State

I do not think that, wholistically, Iowa State is a bad football team. However, this current iteration of Iowa State, with all of its injuries on both sides of the ball that are forcing backups into action, is not good. There is only so much Rocco Becht can carry until this team gets healthier.

8. Baylor

Death, taxes, and Baylor games scoring more than 50 points. That feat has happened in every FBS vs. FBS game Baylor has played this season. It’s easy to predict, as the combination of the high-octane offense with Sawyer Robertson and complete ineptitude on defense lends itself to a lot of points being scored.

9. Kansas

I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face: as long as Jalon Daniels is healthy, Kansas can beat anyone in the Big 12. I’ve seen it too many times in his seemingly 10-year-long career. And this week, that will be put to the test as the Jayhawks travel to Lubbock to take on the conference favorite Texas Tech.

10. Houston

It’s hard to knock Houston too much for their loss to Texas Tech in Week 6, but we will need to monitor them. This was the type of loss that could completely derail a season. QB Conner Weigman left the game early due to injury, and we don’t yet know his status for any of the games moving forward. It’s definitely a situation to keep an eye on.
