Tennessee traveled to the Arizona desert to find answers for a struggling offense against the desperate Cardinals. The Titans remarkably found a way to snatch victory from the abyss of defeat during a stunning win in Week 5 over a high-powered Arizona offense.

Titans Escape The Desert With A Win Like A Mirage In Week 5
First Quarter – Inevitable Doom
Arizona took the ball first and promptly marched down the field with their primary focus on getting young Marvin Harrison, Jr, the ball early and often. He delivered in a big way, getting the ball to the one-yard line where Michael Carter, Jr took the reins.

The Titans could only respond meekly with a field goal, setting an ominous tone that would prevail for most of the game. Arizona resolutely responded with another touchdown after several MHJ targets that featured a patented Kyler Murray scramble. Murray scooted around the edge after Tennessee could not keep him contained on the perimeter.

Second Quarter – Special Teams Duel
The second quarter began quietly, like two ships passing in the night, with a barrage of punts exchanged by both teams. Game management scenarios changed significantly when Titans running back Tony Pollard fumbled the ball deep in Tennessee territory. Pollard’s turnover set the Cardinals up with a prime opportunity to extend their lead, and they took advantage. Afterthought running back Zonovan “Bam” Knight scored on the next play after being initially ruled out at the one-yard line. The touchdown left Tennessee coaches and players searching for answers for a seemingly incomprehensible problem.

Much like the first quarter, Tennessee’s feeble offense could only muster a field goal despite a standout return by emerging special teams ace Chimere Dike. The young receiver produced several highlight reels throughout the season thus far, and allowed Tennessee to score when it didn’t deserve to.

Brian Callahan’s ineptitude at managing the game in the “middle eight” struck again as the Titans were gifted field position. Tennessee resumed doing nothing with the ball on Arizona’s side of the field after a Ward sack on fourth down. The Cardinals punted on the subsequent drive with less than a minute left in the first half. Tennessee’s rookie quarterback mercifully ended the half with a kneel down, which avoided Callahan’s big brain catastrophes.
Third Quarter – Special Teams Are Special Part Two
The halftime break did nothing to assuage fans’ concerns about the Callahan regime after his team punted after three unremarkable plays. Arizona took over possession and began to assert its will on a tired Titans’ defense, but center Hjalte Froholdt’s ill-timed snap caused Kyler Murray injury. The errant snap bounced off Murray’s facemask so hard that it flew forward several yards into Dre’Mont Jones’ waiting arms.

Tennessee’s offense yet again stymied itself into a punting situation, but the defense stepped up to force a punt from Arizona. Murray suffered an injury during the fracas after the fumble and had to be replaced by backup Jacoby Brissett. The Titans regained the ball but were forced to punt at the end of the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter – Hijinks Worthy Of Benny Hill
The Titans’ fatigued defense was keeping the offense within touching distance of the Cardinals, but the dam finally seemed broken. Until the unthinkable happened, that is, when Cardinals RB Emari Demarcado took advantage of a horrific run fit and scored the game-sealing touchdown. After the replay review, it was determined that Demarcado pulled a DeSean Jackson. Tennessee cornerback L’Jarius Sneed must receive the lion’s share of the credit for hustling and putting pressure on the youngster.

Tennessee’s turn to take advantage of the silliness occurred when they decisively drove down the field behind Ward’s arm. The hijinks continued when Callahan elected to go for the extra point instead of the two-point try. Kicker Joey Slye, who missed five kicks before this attempt, predictably missed the PAT. Tennessee’s deficit remained at nine heading into Arizona’s penultimate possession. Ward’s arm came alive during the ensuing possession after the Cardinals punted. Everything proceeded like normal until the zaniest play of recent memory occurred. Cardinals safety Dadrion Taylor-Emerson looked to have secured the game-clinching interception, but fumbled the ball with almost no assistance from Tennessee. After a bit of rummaging and kicking the ball around, somehow, some way, Tyler Lockett secured the touchdown.

The Cardinals’ seemingly insurmountable lead was whittled down to a measly two points, and they needed a drive to ice it. That drive never came, and they punted to a red-hot Titans’ passing attack. Ward calmly led the offense down the field, which included this beautiful strike to much-maligned Calvin Ridley. The embattled receiver battled drop demons alongside his fellow compatriots in the receiver room all game long.

Several plays later, the Slye kicked in the game-winner that possessed a nervy finish that caused panic among the Titans’ brethren.

Callahan has been under tremendous duress after a less-than-impressive start to his coaching career. Calls for his job have increased with every mounting loss and coaching malpractice. Credit to the team for fighting through ridiculous adversity and securing a much-needed victory. However, he is not absolved of the blame that precedes him into every game. The coach must keep winning to see another game, as any mistake could be his last as head coach.

Jeffery Simmons has been a man on a mission this season, as he’s coming for the crown of being the best interior defender in the league. Simmons continually beats the drum of positivity weekly, but for at least one week, he can be proven right. He’s a core building block and shouldn’t be traded unless the return is massively in the Titans’ favor.
Quarterback Cam Ward

The first-time winner struck a much different tone than last week, when he called out the team, stating, “if we keep it a buck, we a**”. Ward wasn’t at his best throughout the contest, throwing for a ghastly 58 yards in the first half and missing several layups. He fought through the adversity and put foot to pedal in throwing for more than 190 yards in the fourth quarter alone. His sheer moxie and willingness to fight willed the team to victory in the game-winning drive. It likely won’t be a pretty rookie season, but he can use this performance as a springboard to greater things.
What’s Next?
Arizona heads to the Midwest to take on the fiery-hot Indianapolis Colts, who beat down the Raiders in a 40-6 blowout.
Tennessee, holders of the seventh overall selection, travel west once more to face the hapless Raiders, who desperately need a win to wipe off the stain of Sunday’s defeat. Interestingly, Las Vegas holds the sixth overall selection.
