Davante Adams, wide receiver, New York Jets

Report: Jets Release Star WR Davante Adams

Days after rumors of trade offers being considered, the New York Jets intend to release veteran wide receiver Davante Adams  and have officially made the move.

Once New York made their intentions to cut quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a parting of ways was expected.  The lack of trade interest isn’t due to talent, after the three-time First Team All-Pro had nearly 800 yards with seven touchdowns on 67 catches in 11 games after being acquired from Las Vegas in October. He finished 2024 with his fifth straight year with over 1,000 yards on total 85 catches and eight touchdowns. The problem is his contract. With such a high cap hit, New York opts to release Adams after an 11-game tenure this season.

Report: The Jets Will Release Star WR Davante Adams

The 2014 second-round pick has been regarded among the league’s best for a decade now. His eight seasons in Green Bay led to a career renaissance for future Hall of Famer Rodgers. Adams’ production was instrumental for Rodgers’ back-to-back MVP campaigns to begin the decade. Over 1,000 receiving yards each of the last five seasons between the Packers, Raiders, and Jets; Davante Adams is still an impactful talent. The reason why the Jets are releasing him is due to the $38.25 million cap hit this season. New York wished to recoup a draft pick after sending the Raiders their 2025th third-round pick before the trade deadline. Unfortunately, Adams’ cap hit is too great to justify parting with draft picks.

Change of Scenery

Davante Adams still has great football left in him. After failing to ignite their chemistry in college in 2022, the Raiders moved on from quarterback Derek Carr in 2023. After the Fresno State alum signed with the New Orleans Saints, the Raiders opted to start Jimmy Garroppolo and Aidan O’Conell as their signal callers. This resulted in Davante’s production taking a hit. However, after arriving in New York, Davante was able to have some success back with Aaron Rodgers. Even at Rodgers’ advanced age, Adams looked like his old self at times last year.

Possible Destinations

Adams will bring historic production and experience into any wide receiver room. The 33-year-old veteran is 56 yards away from 12,000 receiving yards in his career on over 950 catches. With a staggering 103 touchdown receptions, he’s tenth all time in career touchdowns. Ideally, pairing him with a young quarterback on a playoff team could help elevate their potential.

A team like the Los Angeles Chargers would appreciate adding Davante to pair with Ladd McConkey for Justin Herbert’s benefit. Perhaps general manager Eric DeCosta of the Baltimore Ravens can bring Adams in to pair with Zay Flowers as Lamar Jackson’s new outside receiver. In addition, the San Francisco 49ers would be a great fit with Adams’ due to his experience in a similar offense from Matt LaFleur’s in Green Bay.
