2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Nic Scourton, Texas A&M

There were very few 2025 NFL Draft prospects with more hype heading into the 2024 NCAA season than Nic Scourton. The Purdue transfer was a consensus first round prospect from the earliest days of evaluating the 2025 draft class. Scourton managed to maintain that hype among a crowded Texas A&M defensive line in 2024. The tape suggests that teams have an intriguing evaluation ahead of them for the junior EDGE defender.

Player Background

Nic Scourton’s path to Texas A&M was a winding road. Growing up in Bryan, Texas, just five miles from Texas A&M, Scourton opted instead to attend Purdue out of high school. The four star recruit proved to be a force for the Boilermakers. After recording a whopping 10 sacks in his sophomore season, Scourton made the move to transfer closer to home and join Texas A&M.

His junior season at Texas A&M proved to fall a bit short of lofty expectations. Scourton’s sack total was cut in half to just five, and his play was at times overshadowed by teammates Shemar Stewart and Cashius Howell. Still, there are a number of factors that scouts are sure to adore when evaluating Scourton’s professional prospects. These strengths are evident when turning on the tape.

Strengths

Turning on Nic Scourton’s tape, the first thing that jumps out is his movement ability down the line of scrimmage. Scourton has an outstanding knack for navigating traffic and finding the ball carrier. Whether that is done by overpowering down-block attempts or avoiding blocks altogether, Scourton is able to find a ball carrier in any gap. This is especially evident on gap scheme runs. Scourton can feel pullers coming and has the strength to meet trap blocks early and effectively. This talent, coupled with his ability to contort his body, suggests he has more upside in the run game that can be drawn out of him.

It is in the pass game where Scourton’s biggest trademarks exist. Namely, the spin move he goes to on a regular basis is extremely explosive and effective. Scourton does a good job of setting up the offensive lineman with an upfield stem, before breaking back inside on the spin. His overall athleticism is also on display in the pass game, as he was sometimes used as a spy against more mobile quarterbacks. Texas A&M trusted that athleticism enough to drop him into pass coverage as well. In addition to pure athleticism, one thing that jumps out on Scourton’s tape is his motor. Throughout the game, he maintains a fiery play style that coaches are sure to be drawn to. These strengths overall are conducive to very flashy plays in the form of tackles for loss and explosive sacks.

Weaknesses

While the upside to Scourton’s game can be flash plays, there are some fundamental issues with his play. While his ability to navigate traffic in the run game is alluring, he is more susceptible to reach blocks than one would typically like. This can, at times, cause him to lose the edge in the run game. Some of this comes from really good offensive line play, but there are deficiencies in Scourton’s hand usage that allow linemen to stay engaged with him. Outside of his spin move, it seems as though he does not possess an adequate repertoire of counter moves at this stage in his development.

This carries over into the pass game as well. Scourton’s does not yet possess a full repertoire of pass-rush moves that would make him a ca n’t-miss prospect. Additionally, he can be driven upfield a bit too easily and lacks some balance and bend to adjust to tight pass-rush lanes. Some of these balance issues come from a really intense desire to create pass-rush lanes when they may not be there. There is also a bit of a concern in the speed of his play. Scourton looked to be a step more explosive during his time at Purdue. The nature of these issues do provide some hope that they can be remedied at the next level.

Potential Team Fits

NFL Projection

Nic Scourton is a talented and productive player who has been hindered a bit by a lack of refining in his game. He will need to develop future counters in the pass rush game and fight off reach blocks to set the edge more consistently in the run game. However, he has shown that he can disrupt the game as a pass rusher and has the natural ability to navigate traffic and make explosive plays in the run game. Scourton is currently projected to be a late first-round selection. His technical deficiencies help explain why this is the case. A late day one projection is consistent with Scourton’s tape.
