This Is Who the Colts Should Replace Chris Ballard With

Will the Indianapolis Colts hire Mike Borgonzi? Most NFL fans don’t have any idea who that is. For those of you who don’t know, he’s the assistant general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Colts could fire their current general manager, Chris Ballard this offseason.

And if that’s the case, there will be several intriguing candidates to replace him. Guys like John Spytek (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Brian Gaine (Buffalo Bills), and Mike Martin (Detroit Lions) could all get interviews with the Colts.

But perhaps Borgonzi is the best candidate out there. He has played a role in building superb Chiefs rosters over the years.

The Indianapolis Should Replace Chris Ballard With Mike Borgonzi

Chris Ballard’s Tenure in Indianapolis

The Colts hired Chris Ballard in January 2017. While he has been criticized throughout his tenure for not signing big-time free agents and making blockbuster trades, he has done a solid job drafting. He has drafted a bunch of quality players like Quenton Nelson, Jonathan Taylor, Grover Stewart, Michael Pittman Jr., and Josh Downs.

In addition, Ballard found a diamond in the rough by drafting Zaire Franklin in the seventh round in 2018. He’s one of the league’s best linebackers and could make his first Pro Bowl this year.

Unfortunately, Ballard’s drafting skills haven’t paid off like they should. The Colts have posted a 61-68 record since he took over. They’ve only made the playoffs twice, with the last time being four years ago. And they’ll miss the postseason again this year unless a huge miracle happens. They have only a 15 percent chance right now.

A lot of Colts fans want Ballard to be dismissed. And it just might be time for him to go.

Why Borgonzi Should Be the Guy

Borgonzi has been a part of the Chiefs organization since 2009. Before becoming the assistant GM, he served in various roles with the team such as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations.

During his time in Kansas City, Borgonzi has worked under three different general managers: Scott Pioli, John Dorsey, and Brett Veach. Now, he’s ready to take the next step and run his own team.

Hiring Borgonzi could be an excellent move by the Colts, who haven’t been a Super Bowl contender for a long time. Borgonzi knows a thing or two about Super Bowls. In his tenure with Kansas City, the team has won the “Big Game” three times. And they might do it again this season, becoming the first team in history to win three in a row.

Borgonzi has earned the reputation of being the GM’s right-hand man. He’s played a role in the Chiefs landing players like Travis Kelce, L’Jarius Sneed, and Creed Humphrey.

Kansas City has Patrick Mahomes, one of the most talented quarterbacks ever. The Colts’ current quarterback, Anthony Richardson isn’t exactly on Mahomes’ level. But maybe Borgonzi could add the right offensive weapons to help Richardson become an elite signal-caller.

If Chris Ballard is fired, the Colts must fight off several other teams to get Borgonzi. But it could be worth the fight.
