In a year where they were supposed to go all in, the New York Jets have bottomed out. The team sits at a record of 3-8 at the bye week and 1-5 since the firing of head coach Robert Saleh. But the winds of change continue to blow in East Rutherford. Connor Hughes of SNY reports the New York Jets are moving on from general manager Joe Douglas. Douglas had been with the team since the 2019 offseason. Despite a gilded reputation during his time with Baltimore and Philadelphia, success hasn’t followed him to MetLife. Now, the Jets look to finish the 2024 season as they look for both a new head coach and general manager. In his place, senior football adviser Phil Savage has been named interim general manager.
Breaking: Jets Fire General Manager Joe Douglas
The New York Jets have fired general manager Joe Douglas. Douglas had 20 years of front office experience before taking the job in 2019. Between the Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, and Philadelphia Eagles, Douglas put in the work to earn an opportunity. During that time, Douglas was a part of three Super Bowl champion front offices, including most recently the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles.
Initially, the Jets showed some signs of success improving to 7-9 in his first season with Adam Gase. However, since then the team has been unable to build on that towards a winning record. At the time of his firing, the Jets have gone 30-64 under Joe Douglas’ tenure. Fans appreciate his and Robert Saleh’s efforts to build up the defense. They also credit his 2022 Draft class to bring life to the franchise with Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Jermaine Johnson II, and Breece Hall joining the team. However, the mismanagement of the quarterback position between the Zach Wilson pick and the Aaron Rodgers trade set the team back offensively. After five seasons without a winning record and now 14 years without a playoff appearance, it’s an unfortunate end to what was once a promising future.
What’s next?
With or without Joe Douglas, these next few weeks will be crucial for New York. Woody Johnson potentially rejoining the Trump administration would put the team’s head coach and general manager decision up to his brother Christopher Johnson. Should Woody Johnson leave, Christopher will need to field an array of candidates to handle the football operations. With new voices at head coach and the front office, this also comes to deciding on whether or not to move on from Aaron Rodgers during a likely rebuild.
