It is a foregone conclusion that head coach Mike McCarthy will not be with the Dallas Cowboys in 2025. Originally making a name for himself with the Green Bay Packers, the one-time Super Bowl champion joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. Following a 6-10 season headlined by an injured Dak Prescott, McCarthy’s squad produced three consecutive 12-win seasons from 2021 to 2023. However, Dallas never made it out of the divisional round, and owner Jerry Jones made it clear that McCarthy needed to bring this team on a deep playoff run in 2024 to keep his job.
That didn’t happen. The Cowboys are one of the league’s biggest disappointments, and their currently 3-6 record will cost Mike McCarthy his job. McCarthy’s contract will expire at the end of the year, and the Cowboys will spend the early weeks of the offseason trying to find their next head coach. While big names like Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel will inevitably be linked to this team, Jones might not be able to afford them. The billionaire spent the past few months complaining about paying Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, so if money’s an issue, he might go for cheaper options like Klint Kubiak or Matt Nagy.
Cowboys Could Target Saints, Chiefs After Ditching Mike McCarthy
Through the first two weeks of the season, New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak looked like the smartest mind in football. Orchestrating an offense led by Derek Carr and a subpar offensive line, the team scored a combined 91 points in Weeks 1 and 2 while dominating the Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys. However, Kubiak’s name cooled off following a seven-game losing streak where the team lost countless starters, including most of the offensive line and Carr himself.
The Saints offense has yet to recapture their early form, but you can’t blame Kubiak for that. Carr might be back in the lineup, but he doesn’t have Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, or a sizable portion of his offensive line. Frankly, the fact the offense is this competent is a testament to Kubiak’s ability to scheme open plays. While he’s not the most experienced coach out there, he could be unstoppable when paired with a good quarterback in Dak Prescott and a great receiver in CeeDee Lamb.
Second Chances For Nagy
Current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy left Chicago following four unremarkable years with the team. Widely panned for scheme issues, Nagy never had a chance to succeed after inheriting draft bust Mitchell Trubisky from the previous regime. Trubisky is not a starting-caliber quarterback, but despite his subpar play, Nagy still found a way to go 34-31 during his time in the Windy City. His best season came in 2018 when he guided Trubisky and company to a 12-4 record and was a missed kick away from winning his first playoff game.
Matt Nagy may not be the most exciting name on the coaching market, but reports indicate he could receive a second chance in 2025. He deserves the opportunity to show what he can do with a starting-caliber quarterback, and he’ll have one of those in Dak Prescott. Every team in the league wants to find the next Andy Reid, and perhaps Nagy could be another successful disciple after the Cowboys part ways with Mike McCarthy.
