REPORT: Cleveland Browns Trade For Former First-Round Pick

Even though the NFL free agency period is still two days away, the Cleveland Browns have already nailed down one of their top priorities for the offseason. On Saturday, the team acquired wide receiver Jerry Jeudy from the Denver Broncos.

Cleveland Browns Trade For Jerry Jeudy

Jerry Jeudy will instantly become the No. 2 option in the Cleveland Browns wide receivers room that already includes star receiver Amari Cooper. Cleveland continues to stockpile weapons to bolster its offense in anticipation of quarterback Deshaun Watson‘s return to the field from a shoulder injury. Watson reportedly tweeted a series of happy emojis in response to the trade.

A former first-round pick from Alabama, Jeudy has had an up-and-down career in the mile-high city. However, much of that has to do with the up-and-down nature of the Broncos quarterbacks and head coaches. In his four seasons, Jeudy has played for four head coaches already. Denver’s famed trade for Russell Wilson flamed out spectacularly, and the Broncos appear to be in full rebuilding mode.

How Jerry Jeudy Fits in Cleveland

Despite the instability in Denver, Jeudy has managed to snag 121 passes for 1,730 yards and eight scores over the last two seasons. In Cleveland, he’ll bump Elijah Moore to the No. 3 receiver. Moore’s a more natural fit as the third option, as he’s more of a slot/gadget guy in Cleveland’s offense.

The Cleveland Browns reportedly gave up very little to acquire Jerry Jeudy. This is likely because Jeudy’s in the final season of his rookie contract. His cap number is just under $13 million for 2024. This is below what the Browns might have paid for a similar receiver in free agency. Per Mary Kay Cabot at Cleveland.com, the Browns gave up just a fifth and sixth-round choice to the Broncos. Look for the Browns to extend Jeudy soon to lower his cap number and ensure he’ll be around for a few more years.
