Betting Favorites May Be Out On Chicago Bears Star Quarterback

NFL Network's James Palmer and Steve Wyche believe the Atlanta Falcons may be out on trading for Justin Fields.
Justin Fields

With all the speculation on where Chicago Bears star quarterback Justin Fields will play in 2024, one team has recently emerged as the betting favorite to trade for him. Fields recently appeared on the “St. Browns Brothers” podcast on the 33rd team and mentioned he wouldn’t mind playing for the Atlanta Falcons. However, are the Falcons, who are current betting favorites to land Fields (-130), interested in trading for him?

NFL Network’s James Palmer and Steve Wyche Believe The Falcons Have Another Plan On How To Address Their QB Problem

James Palmer and Steve Wyche recently discussed Fields and the fit with the Falcons on their podcast, “The NFL Report.” Editor-in-Chief Dave Choate of the Falcoholic believes that Wyche’s opinions regarding the Falcons are something to watch. Wyche was a former Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter with solid ties to the team. He also doesn’t believe the Falcons will trade for Fields, and they may go the veteran route at quarterback. Palmer and Wyche said this about the Falcons being tied to Fields.

“Remember, they [Atlanta Falcons] have established roster, you could say, on both sides of the ball, to where they could think they could give up a future first round pick to move up from eight. They have plenty of salary cap space, they could make that jump,” Palmer stated.

“The Falcons, their new coordinator Zac Robinson is coming from L.A. Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford. That scheme does not fit Justin Fields,” Wyche replied.

The Falcons have gone the veteran route, adding former second-overall pick Marcus Mariota in 2022, which didn’t work out. However, they are in a challenging position. Sitting at pick eight, that’s outside the range of top-tier college quarterbacks like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels. Consequently, the Falcons might lean towards exploring the possibility of trading up in the 2024 NFL Draft to secure a quarterback.

Justin Fields Comments On Potentially Joining The Atlanta Falcons

First off, Fields said he would love to stay in Chicago and can only see himself as a Bear. However, he mentioned liking what the Falcons have on offense and wouldn’t mind playing for them.

“I think they got a lot of playmakers on the team. Of course, Bijan [Robinson]. They got my boy Kyle [Pitts] there. Of course, Drake [London]…Atlanta would be tough. The only con of going back home is just people hitting my phone crazy, wanting tickets to the game.”

The reason why so many people would want tickets to see Fields play in Atlanta is because he’s from Georgia. Although Palmer and Wyche may believe the Falcons trading for Fields will not happen, never rule anything out.

Will A Team Trade For Justin Fields?

If the Falcons aren’t interested in Fields, is there another team? Multiple teams seem interested in Fields, judging from the numerous inquiries about Fields’ availability during the Senior Bowl. The Pittsburgh Steelers, for instance, appear to be a potential trade candidate for Fields. Simultaneously, the Bears face the impending decision on what to do with Fields. There’s a possibility that they might decide to retain Fields.

Rich Eisen raised an intriguing point on his show, suggesting that Bears General Manager Ryan Poles may want to use the Draft Combine to his advantage. If Poles let the rest of the NFL have meetings with consensus number one overall pick Caleb Williams and let them fall in love with him, NFL teams may be willing to use a historic haul to move up to the first pick to draft Williams. Not only that, but the Bears will end up with not one but two ultra-talented prospects in the first round, plus additional high-value draft capital.
