Chicago Bears GM Hints at Offseason Plans
Bears Retain Head Coach Matt Eberflus, Fire Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy
There were mixed emotions from Bears fans about the decision to retain Bears HC Matt Eberflus. On a positive note, Eberflus had a notable resurgence, significantly revitalizing the Bears’ defense. The players demonstrate a strong affinity for Matt, and Poles is optimistic about his continued effectiveness as the Head Coach. On the other hand, over the past two seasons in the role, Eberflus has amassed a 10-24 record and experienced several losses despite leading by more than 10 points in the fourth quarter. He also hired numerous coaches who proved to be inept.
However, there’s more of a consensus around the firing of Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy. Most fans agree that Getsy was a big problem. His inability to adapt his playbook to suit the strengths of quarterback Justin Fields was apparent. Poles mentioned that the next Offensive Coordinator has to be able to adjust to the talent that’s on the team. Keeping this in mind, the Bears are getting a head start by requesting to interview Seattle Seahawks OC Shane Waldron.

Statements Made From Bears GM Ryan Poles
Poles has clarified that he will thoroughly assess every conceivable aspect when determining the course of action for Fields and the No. 1 overall pick. He stated that the Bears are in “information-gathering mode” as they plan for a decision with Fields and the future at the quarterback position. While acknowledging Fields’ significant improvement, Poles highlighted their unique opportunity to evaluate the top quarterbacks, thanks to possessing the No. 1 overall pick.

When asked about Johnson’s future, Poles said, “Jaylon’s not going anywhere.” Similarly, when questioned about his future, Johnson expressed his anticipation of reaching a deal with the Bears, saying he “expects” it to happen.
Justin Fields’ Time Might Be Over In Chicago
Having a third offensive coordinator in four years is a lot for one person. Unfortunately, it’s hard to be optimistic about Fields’ development. Although Fields is a highly skilled athlete, some believe a change of scenery might benefit him. There are a few different ways to look at the situation regarding Fields.
One solution is to keep Fields. Take the risk that Poles will be able to hire a suitable Offensive Coordinator who can bring the best out of Fields and help eliminate his weaknesses. Poles can also make Fields’ job easier by trading back with the No. 1 pick and getting a haul that can be used to draft elite playmakers on offense.
However, it might be too hard to pass up on the best consensus quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, Caleb Williams. Letting high-profile Offensive Coordinators know that they can have the opportunity to coach a star-rookie quarterback should be enticing. This can also make Poles’ job security last longer by resetting the quarterback contract and starting new.
