2023 NFL Draft: DeMarvion Overshown Scouting Report

After spending the entirety of his five years in college at Texas, DeMarvion Overshown has decided to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft. Overshown had a disappointing 2021, but proved that season was nothing but a fluke with a solid 2022. Appearing in 12 games, the linebacker finished the season with 96 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss, four sacks, and five passes defended.

DeMarvion Overshown originally began his college football journey as a safety. However, after hardly seeing the field for two years, the Texas native switched to linebacker, and the rest is history. He first made a name for himself in 2020 when he recorded 60 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, one sack, and two interceptions. He had a down year in 2021 but still managed to record 74 tackles, 5.5 tackles-for-loss, two tacks, and two passes defended.

Strengths

Smooth, fluid motion when on the move – you can tell he used to be a defensive back;

Speed and burst to go from sideline to sideline while tracking down the ball carrier;

Fast enough to stick with running backs in coverage, long enough to cover tight ends;

Smart player that is rarely out of position;

Quick acceleration makes him a dangerous blitzer;

Relatively new to the position, so the best could be yet to come.

Weaknesses

Terrible tackler – lacks the size and fundamentals to take down NFL runners;

Needs to add a lot of strength to make it as a linebacker and not a safety;

Gets knocked down too easily by opposing linemen;

Too small to play in the middle – exclusively an outside linebacker;

Can be eaten up by opposing linemen and taken out of the play.

Bottom Line on DeMarvion Overshown

DeMarvion Overshown is not the most well-rounded player, but he can play a role at the NFL level. You can tell that Overshown used to be a safety, as the linebacker moves remarkably well through space, knows how to drop back into coverage, and has the speed to go from sideline to sideline. These skills will give him the chance to compete for playing time on passing downs as a rookie, and in a league where throwing the ball has never been more important, these skills are incredibly valuable.

Overshown’s skill in the pass game gives him a path to the field, but he has a lot of work to do if he ever wants to be an every-down player. As you might expect from a player that used to be a defensive back, Overshown is considerably smaller than your average linebacker, and that size disadvantage shows up in the running game. Put simply, the Texas product isn’t capable of handling the run game responsibilities that come with the position, and he’ll need to add a lot of muscle before he can play on early downs.
