2022 was Sherfield’s most productive year as a receiver in the NFL. In 17 games, Sherfield caught 30 passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns. As one of the team’s rotational receivers, Sherfield played 58% of the Dolphins’ offensive snaps (a career-high). He was also a significant contributor on special teams, playing 40% of all special teams snaps. The former undrafted free agent managed a respectable PFF grade of 63.1 in 2022.

Sherfield was signed by the Cardinals after going undrafted in 2018. Coming out of Vanderbilt, Sherfield made an immediate impact in camp with the Cardinals. In his rookie season, he played in 13 games (starting twice) and managed 210 yards and a touchdown on 19 receptions. His receiving output was significant for an undrafted rookie. However, what was more impressive was his special teams contributions. Through his three years as a Cardinal, Sherfield’s status as a special teams ace was what ultimately kept him on the roster. In 2020, Sherfield had three fumble recoveries on special teams.

Despite his primary role being on special teams, Sherfield flashed his potential as a receiver in his rookie year. Unfortunately, in 2019 and 2020, Sherfield did not get as many targets. His opportunities on offense fell drastically. In 2020, he trotted out with the offense just 8% of the time. He subsequently left for the 49ers via free agency in 2021. In his sole season with the 49ers, Sherfield saw 20 targets (though only nine catches). He amassed 87 yards and a touchdown with his opportunities. The special teams impact was still evident too as Sherfield managed two fumble recoveries.

Since signing his rookie contract, Trent Sherfield has recorded 67 receptions for 844 yards and four touchdowns in 78 games.
