It isn’t often that one of the most consistent defensive backs for a Super Bowl-winning team enters free agency without a franchise tag or a contract extension in place. 25-year old cornerback Carlton Davis was a name that was on every team’s radar for free agency due to his high-caliber coverage skills, and starting experience for the Super Bowl LV champs.

Davis was selected in the second round (63rd overall pick) in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers out of Auburn. In his rookie season in 2018, Davis played in 13 games while starting in 12 games as he accounted for 40 total tackles, 36 solo tackles, four pass breakups.

He had a bigger breakout performance the following season by playing and starting in all 14 games. He accounted for 60 total tackles, 54 solo tackles, three tackles, 19 pass breakups, and one interception. In the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl season in 2020, Davis accounted for 68 total tackles, 52 solo tackles, 18 pass breakups, and four interceptions. In the playoffs, he accounted for 22 total tackles, 16 solo tackles, and three pass breakups.

This past season, Davis accounted for 39 total tackles, 33 solo tackles, 11 pass breakups, and one interception. Davis missed seven games for Tampa Bay due to a quad injury in the middle of the season. Davis looked to be placed on a franchise tagged by the Buccaneers but decided to use the tag on wide receiver Chris Godwin.

Davis is one of the best man-coverage cornerbacks, who entered this off-season as a free agent. His goal this 2022 NFL season is to be paid like one of the top defensive backs in the league and to be a defensive leader.
