Trey Lance Fantasy Football Profile

Trey Lance is one of the most intriguing quarterback prospects in this year's draft. This is a Trey Lance fantasy profile.

Trey Lance of the San Fransisco 49ers is an interesting quarterback option in fantasy leagues this year. He was selected third overall in this year’s NFL draft as the successor to starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. So far in the preseason, Lance has looked both like a starting quarterback and a rookie who barely played in college. Either way, Lance has all of the tools to make an impact in his rookie season. So should you draft Trey Lance? This is a Trey Lance fantasy profile.

The Good

The upside that Trey Lance has is immense. In his sophomore season at North Dakota State, he completed 66.9 percent of his passes and threw 28 touchdowns with zero interceptions, and rushed for 1,100 yards. In fantasy football, there is a huge benefit to having a quarterback that has some sort of rushing upside and Lance clearly does. The talent surrounding him also works in his favor. He has George Kittle, a top-three tight end in the NFL. And Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk are two wide receivers that have proven to be good when healthy. Raheem Mostert and Trey Sermon are also two starting-caliber NFL running backs. Add in Kyle Shanahan who is one of the best offensive minds in football and you have a recipe for success. Lance has arguably the best situation of any rookie quarterback.

The Bad

There are a lot of questions about Trey Lance coming into this season. He only played one full season of college football at the FCS level (his sophomore season) and played only one game during the 2020 season (North Dakota State’s season got postponed and Lance opted out to prepare for the draft). He also isn’t even the starting quarterback of his team right now. Lance is expected to play at some point this season but when that will be remains a mystery. Another thing to keep in mind is that Lance is still a rookie quarterback. He will be more prone to making mistakes than other veteran quarterbacks. Out of all of the first-year quarterbacks, Lance has the least amount of college experience which could wind up hurting him.

The Verdict

Despite the concerns surrounding Lance, he is still worth drafting in fantasy leagues. Lance will become the starter at some point, and when that happens he is a QB1. Lance is currently ranked as QB18 on ESPN, a ranking that will wind up looking silly by the end of the season. He is currently going behind players such as Baker Mayfield and Tua Tagovailoa, both of whom have less upside than does Lance. Lance has been working with the first-team offense recently and it would not come as a shock to see him start sooner rather than later. Even if he doesn’t start for a few games, he is still worth stashing on the bench especially since he will only cost a late-round pick in drafts. It is easy to see why Lance can have a “Jalen Hurts” type of impact once he becomes the starter for the 49ers.
