The Running Back Dilemma: Re-Sign Aaron Jones

Aaron Jones Re-Sign

The Green Bay Packers have one of the deepest running back rosters in the league. Most importantly, they have two from the 2017 Draft class with Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. At the end of this season, they will have to make a decision on who to re-sign as they won’t be able to afford to keep both. But this decision is easy. The Packers need to re-sign Aaron Jones.

Why They Should Choose to Re-Sign Aaron Jones

The decision to re-sign Aaron Jones should be a no-brainer. Jones has eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for the second straight year and has 10 total touchdowns to go along with it. Jones is quick on his feet and can make defenses miss and is a reliable pass-catcher when he is involved in the passing game.

Also, for the second straight year, Jones has over 300 receiving yards, which is very good for a running back. He is able to stay healthy week in and week out and is heavily relied on late in the season. If the Packers let him walk, Aaron Rodgers will have to start over on trusting a running back late in the season and won’t get to that point for possibly two years. By then, Rodgers will be starting the back end of his prime. Jones has earned Rodgers’ trust and deserves to be extended not just for his talents alone, but to give Aaron a win-now team. The Packers have finally built a solid team on all ends. Jones is a vital part of the three-headed offensive monster of him, Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers.

A Jones/Dillon Pairing

Unfortunately, Jamaal Williams is the odd man out in this equation. Williams is a great change-of-pace running back but he got injured at the exact wrong time of the season and his absence opened the door for AJ Dillon last Sunday. AJ Dillon obliterated that door. Dillon bulldozed his way to 124 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on Sunday night against the Tennessee Titans.

The announcers, already enthralled by the size of Dillon’s thighs, were mesmerized all night long and even started making comparisons to Derrick Henry. And boy are they right. Dillon is an absolute bruiser of a running back, standing at 6’0” and weighing in at a massive 247lbs, who was running over defensive lineman like they were peewee football players. At one point, it took six defenders to bring him down, but not before Dillon dragged all six of them an extra 10 yards.

Dillon is built for these cold, snowy games in Lambeau. A running back pairing of Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon would be borderline unstoppable. The speed of Aaron Jones and when the defenses finally feel like they’ve got Jones handled, the Packers can just run all those tired defenders over with AJ Dillon.

The Packers Must Be Smart

The Packers have a chance to create the league’s best running back duo this offseason. Both running backs are young and compliment each other excellently. Not to mention it would keep Rodgers from feeling forced to play hero ball most games and keep the offense nicely balanced. If the Packers are smart, they will re-sign Aaron Jones this offseason.
