Shaq Lawson Signs With Miami Dolphins

Shaq Lawson hit free agency after playing 2019 under the final year of his rookie contract. 2019 was essentially a prove-it year for Lawson after the Bills declined to pick up his fifth-year option for 2020 during the offseason. He responded by having his best season so far in his young career. In 2019 Shaq Lawson notched career highs in sacks with 6.5, quarterback hits with 18, tackles for loss with 13, and solo tackles with 21. Throughout the course of his career, Lawson has 16.5 sacks, 38 quarterback hits, and 108 tackles.

Drafted 19th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, Lawson didn’t get off to the start that he would have hoped for. Due to injury, he appeared in only 10 games his rookie season and only started in one. Lawson finished with two sacks in his first season and had four sacks in year two and in year three. 2019 was by far his best season, but was still one that saw him play in rotation. He played in 15 games, and totaled 483 snaps for a 46.62% snap share. Good enough for fifth amongst Bills defensive lineman.

Lawson grew up in South Carolina and attended Clemson University as the number one prep school prospect in the country. In 2013 he tied the Clemson first-year freshman record for sacks. In 2014 Lawson appeared in 13 games and laid the groundwork for a breakout 2015 season. Lawson was a consensus All-American in 2015 and was named first-team All-American by the Associated Press. He was also first-team All-ACC and led all FBS players in tackles for loss while also tallying 12.5 sacks and 88 tackles.
