Jared Goff and Los Angeles Rams Agree to Extension

It was supposed to have taken time. It did. Several weeks, in fact. Just days from the opening of Week One NFL competition, as per multiple reports, quarterback Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams agree to contract extension.

Los Angeles Rams Agree to Extension With Quarterback Jared Goff

Goff, under contract through 2020 by way of the Rams exercising their option, will now be set through 2024. The new deal is expected to be a four-year, $32 million package topping that of Carson Wentz‘s recent signing of $32 million (annual average salary) when the details are ironed out and released. This will include massive guaranteed monies upon finalization.

With 38 total games under his professional belt, Goff (age 24) has thrown for a total of 9,581 yards. He has 65 touchdown passes and has 26 interceptions in that time span. His skills and knowledge have flourished under head coach Sean McVay. The two will be together now for quite some time and there’s no reason to believe more of the same can’t continue.

By comparison, Wentz (age 26), the quarterback he is forever linked to, has thrown for 10,152 yards while connecting for 70 total touchdowns with 28 interceptions. All things being equal, all things aren’t really. The Philadelphia Eagles rely more on Wentz with no Todd Gurley in their backfield to speak of.

For the moment, more so than when the two were drafted in 2016, fate appears to want to smile on the Rams slightly more in the future. One would be inclined to believe that McVay and staff are likely to be slightly deeper entrenched in the Los Angeles soil than leadership in Philly, though neither look unstable.

What Goff’s Contract Extension Means Going Forward

Nothing. That is, nothing other than Mr. Goff has one less concern and the Rams have a bit more peace and clarity going into next offseason.

For those that know Jared Goff, or at least know of him, this is a relief at best. Rarely does he get phased about much and will continue his tomorrow like he started his yesterday. It’s doubtful that he even celebrates past a few handshakes, family hugs, and whatnot. The Rams are focused, Goff is too, and nothing will distract them from the goal at hand.

In other words, Rams fans shouldn’t buy into any of the hype or criticism surely coming the Rams way.
