Mike Daniels Chooses to Sign With the Detroit Lions

All throughout his career, Daniels has played in a 3-4 base defensive scheme in Green Bay. His 310-pound frame and play style are a perfect match in 3-4 defensive schemes, which means if Daniels were to have any success playing in a 4-3 defense, he’d have to scoot inside to defensive tackle. For a player like Daniels, though, that may not be much of a challenge. Throughout his time in Green Bay, Daniels has seen some playing time at defensive tackle. Some would suggest that Daniels has always been a defensive tackle, as 3-4 defensive ends line up inside the tackles.

Daniels was selected in the fourth round (132nd overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Packers. Daniels, a native of Stratford, New Jersey, attended Highland Regional High School in New Jersey, playing both running back and defensive tackle. Daniels went on to attend the University of Iowa for college, choosing Iowa over the University of Temple. Daniels graduated Iowa with a degree in sociology, before going on to spend the next seven years in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

In seven seasons with the Packers, Daniels played in 102 games, starting 72. In those games, Daniels racked up 236 combined tackles and 29 sacks. He also recorded one interception, five passes defended, and one touchdown. In terms of fumbles, Daniels has forced two while recovering three for his career. In 2018, though, Daniels played in only 10 of 16 games after suffering a foot injury. Before suffering the injury in Week 11, Daniels had racked up 18 tackles and two sacks. The Packers placed him on Injured Reserve in early December of 2018 and later released him in late July of 2019. The Lions will certainly enjoy having a player like Daniels heading into 2019.
