Chuma Edoga 2019 NFL Draft Profile

Chuma Edoga is an experienced prospect heading into the 2019 NFL draft. He’s a two-year starter at the University of Southern California and can play either tackle position. Edoga is more of a right tackle, but he recently has worked as a left tackle to help his draft stock.

Edoga is from Atlanta, GA. He attended McEachern High School in Powder Springs, GA. According to the USC Trojans website, Edoga had multiple honors during his senior year of high school including the 2014 Parade All-American first team.

After graduating early from high school, Edoga made the journey west and enrolled at USC. Though he was a backup his freshman year, Edoga saw the field often and even started one game in 2015. Edoga started two games in 2016. He also missed two games that season with one absence being a disciplinary suspension. Edoga played either side of the line. He was a full-time starter in both his junior and senior years.

Edoga’s best trait at the collegiate level was his athleticism. What he might have lacked in technique, he made up with speed and stamina. Edoga has lengthy arms and that has helped him. Above all, the biggest concern moving forward to the NFL is his size. Edoga will need to get bigger and stronger if he wants to start in the NFL.

Strengths

  • versatile tackle with experience at both right and left tackle positions;
  • natural length which allows him to easily get in position to block;
  • foot speed is evident in pass protection situations which help keep edge defenders away;
  • adept blocker while on the move thanks to his speed;
  • good understanding of his position and responsibilities in relation to teammates;
  • efficient pass blocker who doesn’t allow sacks;

Weaknesses

  • light for an NFL tackle as he played at 295 pounds in college;
  • technique can be inconsistent and needs to polish his skills for the next level;
  • should work on upper-body strength;
  • below average as an anchor and run blocker;
  • needs to work on hand placement on punches.

Teams with Need at Position: Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Miami Dolphins.

Projection: Third to fourth round

Bottom Line

While Edoga is not currently a polished prospect, he’s athletic and has good potential. Though he played collegiately at 295 pounds, Edoga has reportedly put on weight and was 315 pounds at his Pro Day in which he performed more drills than at the Combine. If he is able to maintain his weight and add strength, Edoga has the chance to start. However, he’s currently more of a developmental prospect with upside. In addition to adding weight and strength, Edoga’s footwork and can be erratic and is subpar as an anchor. In any case, his dedication in the lead up to the draft is a testament to his commitment to the game.
