Oshane Ximines 2019 NFL Draft Profile

It’s a tough road to the NFL for a two-star recruit who winds up at Old Dominion, but Oshane Ximines is poised to make it after an excellent career rushing the passer with the Monarchs.

He earned Conference USA honors in every year in college. He made the All-Freshman team in 2015, All-Second team in 2016 and All First-Team in 2017 and 2018 as he torched quarterbacks in the league.

By the end of his final season with Old Dominion, Ximines was second among all active FBS players with 33 sacks and tied first among active FBS players with 11 career forced fumbles.

Despite his superb production, there will be plenty who count out a smaller, lighter pass rusher with clear athletic limitations as he enters the pros. His track record, however, suggests he’ll soon prove the skeptics wrong.

Strengths

  • Has demonstrated the ability to react to the snap with great burst;
  • Already has something of a pass rush repertoire, with arm-over and club moves at this disposal;
  • Showcases power in his hands when he gets into pads of opposing linemen;
  • Boasts the quickness to win on the inside both as a pass rusher and when crashing down on run plays;
  • Displays awareness to get hands up and bat down passes when his path to the quarterback is blocked;
  • Does a nice job of disengaging from blocks and find the football as a run defender;
  • Can hold his ground at the point of attack, even against double teams;
  • Tackling technique is sound – consistently wraps up ball-carriers effectively;
  • High motor player who can maintain pursuit throughout the play and closes to the football quickly;
  • Consistent production with 51 tackles for loss and 33 sacks in four seasons.

Weaknesses

  • Does not harness his explosiveness regularly – his burst is inconsistent and he has too many snaps where it is below-par;
  • Lacks the bend and lower-body flexibility to turn the corner;
  • Has displayed the ability to transform speed to power but does not do this on a consistent basis;
  • Struggles when his initial rush stalls due to a lack of counter moves;
  • Light frame with poor lower body strength, too many occasions where powerful punches from linemen knock him off balance;
  • Frequently allows himself to be sealed off from plays in the run game.

Bottom Line

Harnessing consistency and finding the best role in which to deploy Ximines will be the biggest challenges for the team that takes a shot on this undersized pass rusher. Weight will need to be added to a frame that looked well below his listed 255 pounds in college for him to play on the defensive line, and even then it would likely be a stretch to ask him to operate from such a position.

Ximines’ immediate future would be best spent as a situational pass rusher from the outside linebacker spot, allowing him to avoid the kind of contact that often limited his effectiveness in the trenches and make the most of the burst he can produce, providing, of course, he does that on a regular basis.

With no bend of which to speak of, Ximines will have to discover consistency in how he reacts to the snap and showcase the power in his hands more often if he is to succeed in the NFL. Should he do so and further build on the moves at his disposal, then Ximines will have a great chance of excelling at the next level. However, if he is placed in a role where his weaknesses will be magnified or he fails to add the necessary consistency and refinement to his game, Ximines will likely struggle to develop into anything more than an undersized pass rusher who pass blockers will relish facing for the wrong reasons.
