As the New England Patriots reported for their sixth training camp of the off-season, the dreaded injury bug claimed news headlines around the NFL. Veteran wide receiver Jordan Matthews, who signed with the team earlier this off-season, was released due to a “significant” hamstring injury. What’s more, rookie standout Sony Michel walked off the field with an undisclosed injury.

The New England Patriots are Struck by the Injury Bug Early

Jordan Matthews Released

Matthews suffered what is believed to be a “significant” hamstring during Sunday’s training camp session. The injury, which has held Matthews out of team activities since Sunday, is likely to cost Matthews a bit of time, per The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.

Matthews spent the 2017 season playing with the division rival Buffalo Bills, after spending three years with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Matthews promising young career has been derailed by a history marred by injury. With a brief injured reserve stint coming at the end of the 2017 season, Matthews is no stranger to injury. Matthews has suffered from lingering injuries to both his knee and ankle, which has cost him in productivity and playing time.

Once a promising receiver, Matthews was figured to fill the void left by a departed Danny Amendola and suspended Julian Edelman in New England’s slot receiver role. However, with a marred injury history, it is understandable why Bill Belichick and company would sever ties now. Matthews is on a one-year contract with only $170,000 guaranteed.

The Patriots’ receiving duties will fall to Chris Hogan, Kenny Britt, Phillip Dorsett, Malcolm Mitchell, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Braxton Berrios. The team has also worked out veteran receiver Eric Decker.

Sony Michel Injured

Sadly, the injury news does not stop there for the Patriots. Michel left practice early under the watchful eye of head trainer Jim Whalen. Michel’s injury, which is unknown at the moment, was reportedly suffered during team activities.

While Michel’s injury did not appear serious, fans cannot help but hold their breath at the rookie’s injury. Have no fear, as he walked off under his own power with no visible limp.

Behind Michel, the Patriots have plenty of running backs. Rex Burkhead, James White, Mike Gillislee, Jeremy Hill, Brandon Bolden, and Ralph Webb all figure to gain more reps until Michel’s return.
