Washington Redskins Sign Paul Richardson to Five-Year Deal

Richardson has spent all four years of his NFL career with the Seahawks. The young receiver was drafted by Seattle in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Colorado University.

In his career, Richardson has only played a single 16-game season. He has posted paltry numbers throughout his time in Seattle, only breaking the 300-yard mark once. He made his mark as a deep threat, averaging 9.3 yards per reception in 2014, 13.7 yards per reception in 2016, and 16 yards per reception in 2017. Richardson only appeared in a single game in 2015, recording a single reception for 40 yards and tearing his ACL in the third quarter of the season opener. He was drafted with the idea that he would play a role on special teams, returning kickoffs. In four seasons, he fielded only 21 kickoffs for a total of 481 yards and no touchdowns.

Obtaining Richardson is just another brick in the wall of what is turning out to be a busy off-season for the Seahawks. Michael BennettRichard Sherman, and Jimmy Graham have all been reported to be leaving the team this season. Bennett will make his way to Philadelphia, Sherman to San Francisco, and Graham will reportedly land in Green Bay.

It is not immediately clear if Richardson was brought in to fill the same role he performed in Seattle. Alex Smith, traded to the Redskins by the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this off-season, was the NFL’s most accurate passer on deep-thrown balls during his 2017 campaign according to Pro Football Focus. Richardson’s signing appears to be a move to take advantage of Smith’s talent.
