Bashaud Breeland Fails Physical, Won’t Sign With Carolina Panthers

Bashaud Breeland

The Carolina Panthers are withdrawing their contract offer for defensive back Bashaud Breeland on Friday. This comes after he failed a physical with the team due to a non-football injury as Max Henson, a writer for the official Panthers website, reported. Caroina had offered him a three-year, $24 million deal.

Carolina Panthers Void Contract Offer to Bashaud Breeland After Failed Physical

The fifth-year player out of Clemson is just 26-years-old and spent the first four seasons of his career with the Washington Redskins. Breeland took over as a starter his rookie season and never looked back. He has had an inconsistent career thus far but his athleticism, youth, and upside could make him one of the highest paid players at his position. Financial terms have not been released.

After being thrust into the fire as a rookie, Breeland responded well. He posted 14 pass deflections and two interceptions while adding a pair of forced fumbles. Breeland’s playmaking ability has remained fairly consistent since his rookie year. He had another pair of interceptions in his sophomore year while posting a career-high with three in 2016. This past season, Breeland’s production tailed off a bit. Although he did record a career-high in pass deflections with 19, he had career lows in tackles, interceptions and fumbles forced.

Breeland has been targeted a lot while lining up across from Josh Norman the past two seasons. He has good size and speed to match up with top wideouts but can get out of position on deep balls. He has allowed too many long completions and touchdowns over his career to be a true number one lockdown corner.
