Jacoby Brissett Traded to Indianapolis Colts

Jacoby Brissett Traded: New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been traded to the Indianapolis Colts for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett.

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been traded to the Indianapolis Colts. In exchange, the Colts sent wide receiver Phillip Dorsett to the Patriots. The second year player out of North Carolina State was the centerpiece of a deal between the two AFC teams mid-day on Saturday.

The trade comes just after New England’s final preseason game against the New York Giants. Brissett posted 28 completions on 39 attempts for 341 yards and four touchdowns.

Brissett joined the Patriots in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft and spent the majority of the season on the depth chart behind Jimmy Garoppolo and Tom Brady.

The young third-stringer made his first start after Garoppolo’s injury during week two of Brady’s 2016 four game suspension. He threw for 103 yards and no touchdowns on 11 completions in a win against the Houston Texans. In week three against the Buffalo Bills, Brissett’s numbers improved at home in Foxborough but again failed to find the end zone through the air.

The Colts acquired Brissett in exchange for former first-round pick wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. Concerns loom for the AFC South team about Andrew Luck‘s availability for the upcoming season. Saturday’s trade adds depth to the quarterback slot that currently has Scott Tolzien slated to start the season. Should head coach Chuck Pagano choose to start Brissett ahead of Tolzien, Brissett would face the Los Angeles Rams on the road September 10th.

The exchange also provides added depth to the Patriots receiving corps after Julian Edelman suffered a season ending ACL tear earlier in the season. Dorsett was viewed as an explosive playmaker in college. But the receiver produced only 753 yards and three touchdowns in two years with Indianapolis. The move poses a risk for quarterback depth for New England.  Garoppolo serves as the lone back up for the Patriots going into week one against the Kansas City Chiefs.
