Cornerback Captain Munnerlyn has agreed to terms on a four-year deal with the Carolina Panthers according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The 28-year-old spent his first five seasons with the Panthers (2009-2013) while spending the last three with the Minnesota Vikings.

Captain Munnerlyn Agrees to Four-Year Deal With Carolina Panthers

Consistently one of the top nickel backs in the league, Munnerlyn has long advocated for recognition of the under-appreciated position. Although last season could be considered a down year by his standards, Munnerlyn’s value is high in a league where defenses used five defensive backs around 80% of the time last year. Although he had no interceptions last season with the Vikings, he picked off two passes a year for four consecutive years and has scored defensive touchdowns three of the last five years, including one in 2015 against the Green Bay Packers which helped the Vikings win the division. Although Munnerlyn has been relegated to slot duties the past two seasons, he also has experience playing outside if the team needs it.

A native of Mobile, AL, Munnerlyn played his college ball at South Carolina before being drafted by the Panthers in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft. With the Carolina Panthers, Munnerlyn earned the team record for interception return touchdowns with five, and became the only player in franchise history to return two turnovers for touchdowns in two separate years (2012 and 2013). A contributor since his rookie year, Munnerlyn also showed the ability to return punts with the Panthers.

Following the 2013 season, Munnerlyn signed a three-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings worth $14.25 million. He helped the Vikings win the division in 2015 and won the Korey Stringer Good Guy award presented by the Twin Cities media all three season with the Vikings.
