Logan Ryan Signs With Tennessee Titans

A versatile defender, Logan Ryan can be a starting number two cornerback for most NFL teams. Ryan was drafted out of Rutgers in the third round of the 2013 draft by the Patriots. After his first two seasons Ryan became a full-time starter, lining up as either Malcolm Butler‘s wingman or in the slot.

Ryan is not the fastest corner, and generally suffers when covering speedy receivers but his large size and ability to track big targets over the middle allows him to fill a niche role on any defense that already has talent in the secondary. He’s not a flashy play-maker like Xavier Rhodes or Marcus Peters, but Ryan generally displays quality technique and a matching football IQ.

He has consistency concerns for sure, but he’s demonstrated an ability to be coached. This was present during the later half of the 2016 season, where New England’s corner group morphed into one of the best units in the NFL after a mediocre start. Ryan was a large part of that uptick, forcing four turnovers in a six-game stretch that includes the postseason.

Ryan’s best game was against the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round, where he had seven combined tackles, a sack, one interception he returned for 23 yards, and three broken passes. While the competition was arguably soft considering the Texans’ sub-par passing game, Ryan was instrumental in halting a Texans’ forth quarter comeback attempt with a game-sealing interception.

Logan Ryan may not be on the same level as A.J. Bouye or Stephon Gilmore, but he’s more than proven that he’s a capable defensive back. Ryan is perfect for any team on a budget that requires a clear second option at corner.
