One of the NFL’s most elite pass-rushers, Cameron Wake, was set to become a free agent after the 2016 season, something the Miami Dolphins felt they couldn’t allow to happen.
On Saturday, the Dolphins and defensive end, Cameron Wake, agreed on a two-year, $15 million contract extension, including $10 million guaranteed, which will lower Wake’s 2016 cap hit that would have been $9.8 million. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and later confirmed by the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.
Wake, 34, may only have a few years left in him, so signing this contract increases the odds that Wake finishes his career in Miami.
The Pro Bowl defensive end feels there’s no reason why he can’t be a disruptive force for the Dolphins defensive line for many years to come, that’s providing he can stay healthy of course. The 34-year-old played in only seven games last season due to a torn Achilles, yet the former Nittany Lion still managed to record seven sacks in half the season.
Keeping Wake was a top priority for the Dolphins after they lost defensive end, Olivier Vernon, when he signed with the New York Giants earlier this off-season. They Giants gave Vernon five-years and $85 million, with $52 million in guaranteed money.
The Dolphins brought in former Buffalo Bills defensive end, Mario Williams, whom they signed to a two-year, $17 million contract, with the maximum value of the contract reaching $20 million with incentives, according to contract numbers obtained by USA Today. Williams also received a $4 million signing bonus.
Miami should have one of the most dominant defensive line’s in the NFL. Their defensive line consists of Cameron Wake, Mario Williams, Ndamukong Suh and former first-round pick Dion Jordan. Jordan was drafted by the Dolphins In the first-round (No. 3 overall pick) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of the University of Oregon. The former Ducks standout is currently wrapping up a year long suspension for the use of performance enhancing drugs.
