Detroit Red Wings Claim Christian Djoos

The Detroit Red Wings have claimed defender Christian Djoos off waivers. He had been a member of the Anaheim Ducks previously. The season is only days away and teams are finalizing rosters and grabbing extra value where they can. Elliotte Friedman announced the waiver claim late Saturday morning.

Red Wings Claims Christian Djoos

Djoos began 2019-20 with the Washington Capitals but went to Anaheim via trade for Daniel Sprong. The 26-year-old defender played in just 11 games between the two organizations with one goal and three points. All of those came in nine contests with the Ducks. He also played in 42 games for the AHL’s Hersey Bears and scored a respectable five goals and 32 points in 42 games. Perhaps the most important stats from last year were a 52.4 Corsi For and 6.1 relative Corsi. That clearly shows Djoos was capable of helping drive offence even in a small sample.

The Capitals originally drafted Djoos in the seventh round of the 2012 Draft, but he didn’t debut until 2017-18. His rookie season featured 63 games with three goals and 14 points. Djoos also contributed a single assist during Washington’s march to the Stanley Cup. 110 career games isn’t a lot of experience, but Washington and to a lesser extent, Anaheim, have had fairly deep bluelines in recent years. It will be good for Djoos to get on a roster where there is more of a chance for him to get significant minutes.

Where Djoos Fits in Detroit

The Red Wings has one of the least talented bluelines in the NHL at this point. Only Filip Hronek should feel comfortable in his role as the team’s leader and powerplay quarterback. They do have some gritty or interesting options in the form of Patrik Nemeth and Troy Stecher, but this claim feels like a prime opportunity for both Detroit and Djoos. His underlying numbers very much point to deserving a larger role for the compressed season everyone is about to experience.
