Gustav Nyquist

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced that forward Gustav Nyquist underwent successful shoulder surgery on a torn labral in his left shoulder. Nyqvist is expected to make a full recovery in five to six months.

Gustav Nyquist Sidelined Up to Six Months

According to the team, Nyquist had been dealing with this chronic issue in his shoulder for a couple of seasons. Surprisingly enough, Nyquist was able to perform at a high level over the past couple of seasons. However, this injury has limited his ability to perform at a high level. Nyquist and the team decided that now was a good time to have the surgery. After signing a four-year contract with the Blue Jackets in July of 2019, Nyquist recorded 42 points (15 goals and 27 assists) in 70 regular-season games. Among forwards ranked second on the team with assists and points. During 10 postseason games, Nyquist recorded four points (two goals and two assists).

A native of Sweden, Nyquist was originally drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round (121st overall) during the 2008 NHL Draft. During his time in the league, not only did Nyquist play for the Red Wings and Blue Jackets but the San Jose Sharks too. In 570 career NHL games, Nyquist recorded 348 points (146 goals and 202 assists). Nyquist in 65 career playoff games recorded 21 points (five goals and 16 assists).

Going Forward

This is a big loss for the Blue Jackets on offence. Columbus was already thin at forward but losing a player as Nyquist hurts. Nyquist was playing on the left as a top-six winger in the Blue Jackets lineup. Obviously, for the Blue Jackets, it is going to be next man up. Unless the Blue Jackets decide to look at the free-agent market and see what is left.
