The Ottawa Senators have annonced they have re-signed goaltender Matt Murray to a four-year, $25 million contract extension. The contract carries a salary-cap hit of $6.5 million.

Ottawa Re-Signs Matt Murray
The Senators are looking towards the future. They are building a nice young team and added to that by trading for Murray from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Keeping him around for another four years is a good contract. Many projections show the Senators to be a team that can make the playoffs in about two seasons with all the young talent they have on the roster. Murray was originally drafted by the Penguins in the third round 83rd overall in the 2012 NHL Draft. However, with a salary cap crunch happening in Pittsburgh, Murray became expendable. In his career, Murray won two-Stanley Cups with the Penguins. For his career, Murray in 199 career games, Murray has a 2.67 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. His best season came in 2016-17 when he had a 2.41 goals-against average and .923 save percentage.
Going Forward
Even though he had a down year with the Penguins he is still capable of being a starting goalie in the league. It is hard to base everything on one bad season, but Murray hasn’t proven he can stay healthy in the league. He won early on with the Penguins. But he did not find his form last season losing his job to Tristan Jarry. Now Murray is the man in Ottawa. So now he has to prove it to the Senators and the world that he is the guy that won the Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh. Murray had arbitration rights as a restricted free agent, so the contract term and length are a bit surprising. But the Senators want to stop the goalie carousel in Ottawa. And with this move today it guarantees that.
