News was released that all-time great Canadien centre Guy Lafleur is battling cancer again.
Guy Lafleur Diagnosed With Cancer Again
With the news that Guy Lafleur’s cancer has returned, the Canadiens family would like to send best wishes to our legendary No. 10 as he faces this latest challenge.

The legendary Montreal Canadiens right wing Guy Lafleur had lung surgery in November 2019 to remove the upper lobe of one of his lungs and to remove the lymph nodes. He also had quadruple bypass heart surgery in September 2019. Even with these health issues he fought back against the disease until this latest diagnosis.
A representative from Center hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) issued the diagnosis to Lafleur. The 69-year-old all-time great stated, “It’s a big blow, but I am continuing my battle with confidence and serenity thanks to the support of the CHUM,” Lafleur said in the statement. “I would particularly like to thank the entire team of Dr. Tehfe of the Integrated Cancer Centre for their professionalism and good care.”
Lafleur Had a Marvelous NHL Career
Lafleur played for 14 years with the Canadiens and then took a three-year retirement only to return and play one season with the New York Rangers and two with the Quebec Nordiques. His NHL career statistics will show he belongs in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 1988. Lafleur became the first player in NHL history to score at least 50 goals and 100 points in six consecutive seasons. To say he was a dominant offensive player is an understatement.
He tallied 60 goals in the 1977-78 season which led the league. In the 1976-77 season he had 56 goals and 80 assists for 136 points which also led the NHL.
In total Lafleur had 560 goals and 793 assists in 1,126 games. That included 154 power play goals and 266 power play assists. He also had 98 game-winning goals leading the NHL in that category four different seasons.
