Finnish Hockey Players
The best Finnish hockey player of all time is considered by many to be Teemu Selanne. He is now 50 years old and has been retired for six years. He holds the record for the most goals scored in a rookie season, with a massive 76 to his name. He had a glittering career, recognized as a certified Hall of Famer within Finland, Scandinavia and further afar.
Just behind Teemu on our list, but ahead of him on total points scored, is Jari Kurri. He also had a long career but has since retired, after 17 seasons in the NHL. He managed to reach many all-star games and has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, the first Finn to do so. He played alongside the great Wayne Gretzky, and so became one of the most experienced players on the ice too, winning plenty of silverware in the process.
Third on our list is Tomas Sandstrom. He was born in Finland but played for the Swedish national team. Although this seems out of the ordinary, it did not take anything away from the skill that he possessed on the ice. He is the fourth top scorer in terms of Finnish hockey players, and he played for great teams such as the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings.
Saku Koivu is fourth on our list, and his story is one for the ages. He overcame cancer back in 2001/02 and still managed to continue his sparkling career for 15 seasons, taking him to the Olympics on four occasions, as well as the world championships and the World Cup of Hockey. He played well over 1000 NHL games (a total of 1124 before his retirement in 2014.
In fifth place, we have Miikka Kiprusoff. He was a goaltender, and perhaps the best one to come out of Finland, making life extremely difficult for his opponents. He is famous for pulling off some remarkable acrobatic saves, as well as keeping the basic shots on goal out that have helped his teams out tremendously. He has also managed to reach the Olympics and played in two world championships. He was also in the World Cup of Hockey squad as well.
Finally, we have Jyrki Lumme, who was a defenseman. Given that he played in this position, it is a miracle that he managed to place among the top ten Finnish scorers of all time, with a massive 468 points. Through his time playing for five different teams, he has managed to perform at a very good level in terms of scoring for a centre, never mind for a defenseman. That is why he has placed on our list of the top Finnish hockey players of all time.
