Michael Frolik Signs With the Montreal Canadiens
Over his 12-year NHL career, Frolik has played for the Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, and Buffalo Sabres. He has put up 159 goals and 225 assists for 384 career points in 850 career games. He was originally drafted in the first round, 10th overall of the 2006 NHL draft by the Panthers.
What This Means for the Future
The 32-year-old Frolik will look to continue his role as a depth piece under his new contract. Frolik struggled last season, totalling his lowest number of goals, assists, and points since the 2012-13 season.
Frolik began the 2019-20 season in his fifth year with the Flames. As the season progressed it appeared he was getting phased out of Calgary, averaging a career-low 11:56 time on ice. After 38 games in Calgary, he was traded to the Sabres where he would appear in 19 games. While in Buffalo, Frolik only had one goal and three assists for four points.
Despite a down year for Frolik, it’s likely he still can contribute to a team. Under his new contract, he’ll look to return-to-form as a solid depth winger. At his best, Frolik can be a 40-point player, something he’s done five times before.
This year will be an important one for Frolik who is looking to prove that last year was a fluke and he’s still capable of doing his job well. If he’s able to settle in and be surrounded by solid teammates, there’s no reason to believe that last year was anything but an outlier.
