Tobias Rieder Signs With Buffalo Sabres

Tobias Rieder has signed a league-minimum contract for one season. The fourth line forward has been a good penalty killer and can get shorthanded opportunities.

Tobias Rieder Signs With Buffalo Sabres

Last season for the Calgary Flames he collected just four goals and six assists for 10 points.

During the 2018-19 season Rieder was highly criticized by the Edmonton Oilers owner for failing to score a goal in 67 games. He is more of a defensive forchecker than a scorer. He has played for the Arizona Coyotes, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames.

Tobias Rieder was traded by the Coyotes to the Kings in February of 2018. In return the Coyotes received goalie Darcy Kuemper who has starred in the net for the Arizona club making it a very one-sided trade.

Rieder’s career statistics show 59 goals and 79 assists in 434 games. His Corsi For is 47.7 and his Relative Coris is -0.3.

What This Means Going Forward

Tobias Rieder has yet to fit in with any one team and needs to find a role on his new team. He can be a contributor on the penalty kill unit and is skilled at gaining control of the puck. Over his career he has 175 takeaways as compared to just 65 giveaways.

The native of Landshut, Germany stands 5′-11″, 186 pounds and was the 114th selection by the Oilers in the 2011 NHL draft. He can be a physical player when needed and has collected 396 hits in his 434 career NHL games.

Rieder can contribute on his new team and he certainly can improve his offensive game as scoring has just not been his forte. He gets open enough to be able to score but for some reason just can’t finish.

Look for Reider to do whatever is necessary to earn a permanent spot on the forward line.
