The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that defenceman Brian Dumoulin is sidelined for a minimum of eight weeks after having successful ankle surgery on Sunday. He’ll be re-evaluated after that time.
Brian Dumoulin underwent successful ankle surgery at UPMC Presbyterian today.
Dumoulin, who was injured last night, had surgery to repair lacerated tendons in his left ankle.
He is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of eight weeks.

Brian Dumoulin Injured
Dumoulin suffered a lacerated ankle during his first shift after St. Louis Blues forward Zach Sanford fell into the back of Dumoulin’s legs. Pittsburgh lost the game, 5-2, to the defending Stanley Cup champions.
So far this season, Dumoulin has scored one goal and six assists for seven points in 23 games. He also has eight penalty minutes in the 2019-20 season. His possession numbers are 58.7 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 6.2.
Over his seven-year NHL career, Dumoulin has played just for the Penguins. He has 11 goals and 70 assists for 81 career points in 342 career games. Pittsburgh originally drafted him in the second round, 51st overall of the 2009 NHL Draft. He played his college hockey at Boston College.
This is his the 28-year-old’s second stint on the injured reserve as he missed 11 days in October with a lower-body injury.
What This Means for the Future
It’s another in a long line of injuries for the Penguins, who look like an ER ward. Forwards Sidney Crosby and Nick Bjugstad have been on the shelf for a while. Bryan Rust was injured in practice on Friday and Justin Schultz is also out.
The Biddeford, Maine native has been a solid partner to Kris Letang. Dumoulin may not have a lot o points so far this season, but he’s logged a lot of ice time. He averages 21:04 of time per game, which is the second-highest on the team.
Pittsburgh is still clinging onto the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference despite all of the injuries. The Penguins are doing their best to stay afloat and wait for Crosby and others to return to the lineup.
