The Pittsburgh Penguins signed free agent defenceman Marcus Pettersson to a one-year contract worth $874,125. The signing comes a day before training camp is scheduled to start.

Marcus Pettersson Signs With the Pittsburgh Penguins
Over his two-year NHL career, Pettersson has played for the Anaheim Ducks in addition to the Penguins. He has put up three goals and 26 assists for 29 career points in 106 career games. He was originally drafted in the second round, 38th overall of the 2014 NHL draft by the Ducks.
Last season he scored two goals and 23 assists for 26 points between the Ducks and Penguins. He also added 17 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 50.3 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 3.5%.
The deal is one-way with no performance or signing bonuses. Pettersson will still be a restricted free agent after the deal. Pettersson was a part of the deal that sent Daniel Sprong to the Anaheim Ducks back in December of 2018.
What This Means for the Future
The fact that Pettersson took barely more than his qualifying offer is a relief for the Penguins. A team that was already over the cap before he was locked up, they couldn’t afford to give Pettersson much of a raise. The player ended up opting for a team-friendly deal to prove his worth further for next season.
The Penguins retain a solid young piece that should slot in next to Justin Schultz on the team’s second pairing. He provides as a young, cheap option for the Penguins defence, something they are in desperate need of right now. He’ll serve nicely as a two-way complement to Schultz’s offence, and they should be allowed to play the type of game that both players thrive in.
