Jacob Trouba Signs with San Jose
Contract: Four Years
AAV: $8.25 million
Defenceman Jacob Trouba signs a new contract with the San Jose Sharks, adding a veteran presence and more than a decade of NHL experience to the blueline. The signing comes after Trouba completed the final season of his previous contract and entered free agency as one of the most recognizable veteran defenders available on the market.
Trouba appeared in 81 games during the 2025-26 season, recording 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points. He also averaged more than 22 minutes of ice time per game, continuing to play a significant role at even strength and on the penalty kill. His combination of physicality, leadership, and durability helped him remain an important contributor throughout the season.
Jacob Trouba Career Background and Playing Profile
The Winnipeg Jets selected Trouba ninth overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Since making his NHL debut, he has established himself as a reliable top-four defenceman while spending time with the Jets, New York Rangers, and Anaheim Ducks.
Standing six-foot-three and weighing over 210 pounds, Trouba built his reputation as a physical defender capable of delivering impactful hits and handling difficult defensive assignments. Throughout his career, he has regularly matched up against opposing top forwards while providing leadership both on and off the ice.
In addition to his defensive responsibilities, Trouba has contributed offensively throughout his career. He has surpassed 30 points multiple times and recorded a career-high 50-point season in 2018-19. His ability to move the puck, join the rush, and contribute secondary offence has helped him remain a valuable NHL defenceman for more than a decade.

What the Jacob Trouba Signing Means for San Jose
For the Sharks, this signing adds an experienced defender capable of playing meaningful minutes in a variety of situations. Trouba brings leadership, physical play, and nearly 1,000 games of NHL experience to the organization.
His versatility should allow him to fit into several different roles depending on roster construction. Whether deployed on a second pairing, used heavily on the penalty kill, or relied upon as a veteran mentor for younger players, Trouba provides valuable flexibility.
While he may no longer be at the peak of his career, Trouba remains an effective NHL defenceman who can contribute in multiple areas of the game. As San Jose looks to strengthen its defensive group, adding a player with Trouba’s experience and leadership could prove to be an important addition heading into the upcoming season. No doubt, with Darnell Nurse coming to town, too, there is a new identity brewing in The Bay.
