Buffalo Sabres vs Boston Bruins First-Round Playoff Series Recap

The Buffalo Sabres vs Boston Bruins 2026 Eastern Conference Stanley Cup Playoff first-round series saw Buffalo do something they haven’t done in nearly 20 seasons. They won a playoff series, and they won against a heated rival. Buffalo beat Boston in six games in a series where they hardly seemed to be out of a game. The minute Zach Benson scored off an assist from Josh Doan at the 5:58 mark of the third period, the countdown started. After Josh Norris iced it on an empty-netter, it was case closed. Now, it’s on to the next round.

Throughout the regular season, the Sabres had 10 different players put up at least 41 points, or a half-point per game. That trend continued in the first round, with at least eight different Sabres putting up goals and helpers, showing off their vast depth. Meanwhile, the Bruins couldn’t keep up.

Sabres Series Review: A Team That Never Backed Down

It was a recurring theme throughout the series after Boston took a 2-0 lead early in Game 1. The Sabres battled back and stole the first one before dropping Game 2. Even then, they showed signs of rallying. After that ill-fated second game, Buffalo proved it was more than just happy to end its playoff drought.

They went down early again in Game 3. Then they bounced back with three unanswered goals before the statement win came in Game 4. Game 5 went into overtime as the Sabres had a chance to win the series on their home ice. But it wasn’t meant to be. The Bruins held on to force a Game 6, carrying momentum back to the TD Garden.

Sticking with the never-say-die theme, the Sabres didn’t let the hostile crowd in Boston faze them. They jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before holding on to win Game 6. It was the first time the Sabres won a playoff series since that magical 2006-07 season.

If they take that same mentality that no obstacle is too big into the second round, they will be hard to beat. The real question is: Can do this when the stakes are even higher?

Experience and Muscle Couldn’t Save the Bruins

The Bruins had the edge in experience. With a retooled bottom six that craved contact, they could have set the tone early. For the most part, they did. Jumping out to early leads gave the Bruins an edge. But they couldn’t keep up with the Sabres for a few reasons.

In four-straight games, the Sabres held Boston to two goals or less. Mishaps when they had the puck played a role. When they had chances to score, the Bruins hesitated. They let the Sabres routinely outshoot them. Because of that, the resulting 2.0 goals per game through six contests materialized.

The Bruins are capable of competing against anyone. It’s all about maximizing scoring chances. If they steamroll back into the playoffs next season, they can’t underperform when they’re in the offensive zone. That put way too much pressure on them defensively and in the net, and once again, it led to a predictable outcome.

What’s Next After the Sabres vs Bruins Recap

Buffalo will go on to face either the Tampa Bay Lightning or the Montreal Canadiens. Both teams were deadlocked in a 3-3 series tie after Tampa’s 1-0 overtime win. This gives Buffalo time to rest while Tampa and Montreal go at it again.

The Bruins know exactly what they need. They can go out and get another experienced player or two, preferably players who regularly get pucks to the net. Boston already proved it can bounce back and become a relevant team again. Now, the Bruins must make a few more adjustments and make a deep playoff run with this core.
