Vegas Golden Knights Offer Controversial Goaltender PTO

The Vegas Golden Knights have signed controversial goaltender Carter Hart to a reported professional tryout (PTO) per Elliotte Friedman. Carter Hart is the first player of the five acquitted in the Hockey Canada trial to sign with an NHL team.

Carter Hart Given PTO from Vegas

While still suspended by the National Hockey League until December 1st, he was eligible to sign with an NHL team as early as October 15th. His first game back in the NHL could be as soon as the December 2nd game at home. That is against the Chicago Blackhawks. That is assuming this PTO works out and he signs an NHL contract afterward.

Analysis

Since the announcement of the acquittal, Carter Hart has been linked several teams. He was expected to sign with one them at the earliest opportunity. It’s sure to spark controversy among fans around the league and in the Vegas market. The Vegas Golden Knights issued a statement on Carter Hart.

The Vegas Golden Knights are looking to be in Stanley Cup contention once again this season. Now, they’re looking for more insurance in net behind Adin Hill and Akira Schmid. Hart is sure to be rusty after almost two years away from hockey and could use AHL starts before making a return to NHL action. It will be interesting to see the reaction he will receive upon his return. Also, it will depend on whether or not the Golden Knights will schedule his first game at home rather than on the road.

Carter Hart’s career numbers in Philadelphia before the trial were 96-93-29 with a save percentage of .906% and goals-against average of 2.94. The Vegas Golden Knights are also facing some uncertainty in net. This is after the injury to Adin Hill on Tuesday against the Calgary Flames. He was practicing today, but his status going forward is unclear at this time. It remains to be seen what the effect this signing will have on the rest of the players acquitted.
